Course Description
This course provides an overview of major issues facing global health and the implications for nursing
practice. Students are encouraged to think critically about how they can contribute to the improvement of
health of populations and specific population groups. The goal of the course is for students to have advanced
knowledge about global health and health systems and examine them within a cross cultural perspective.
The interconnectedness between global health and nursing are also examined in light of the issues that
affect the profession in various parts of the world.
Learning objectives
At the end of the course, the students will be able to:
1. Describe a broad picture of global health, burden of diseases, social determinants of health and the
challenges to be met in improving the health of various populations in the world arena.
2. Critically analyze specific international issues such as health of various populations, noncommunicable diseases and aging, environmental health, infectious diseases and others.
3. Describe the impact of various health systems upon health of populations particularly in vulnerable
areas of the world
4. Demonstrate understanding of global health nursing and the issues facing the profession as
exemplified in cases from different parts of the world.

Evaluation/Grading
