Technical Writing: Informal Proposal

Name _______________________________________________ Period _____________

This trimester you will write an informal proposal following the structure laid out for you below.
There are three (3) parts to an informal proposal:
1. THE INTRODUCTION This portion includes the PROBLEM, the SOLUTION,
and the proposals OBJECTIVES.
2. THE BODY This portion includes scheduling/timeline, budget, resources,
equipment, etc.
3. THE CONCLUSION This last portion should include a brief summary of the
proposal and a request for action (for your targeted audience).
TOPIC: Being a senior in high school is a milestone. Most students have prepared and
anticipated their final year in high school since at least junior high. To make the senior year even
more memorable, you will develop a proposal that will request a new tradition for seniors and/or
an opportunity to create/build this years senior gift.
Choose wisely because you will need to have information for each of the sections of the
proposal. In other words, if you just propose that the senior tradition be to give all seniors an
early-out, you wont have anything to write in the body portion of your proposal (no timeline, no
budget, no resources, etc.). On the other hand, if you think there should be a special trip for
seniors or the seniors should build a special memorial, that proposal would require some
scheduling, a budget, some resources, etc.
Obviously, the idea is to give you some practice putting your ideas together in a persuasive,
compelling, and organized manner within the framework of something you may face in the work
environment. Have fun with it, but still focus on learning the structure of a technical proposal.

On the back of this sheet, complete a rough draft of your proposal by filling in each section of
the template.
