a. When can we say words rhyme?
We can say Rhyme when words sound alike or similar, usually through a
repeated vowel sound, and with or without a final consonant.
b. Give an example of the following types:
- Masculine rhyme: Now, Hat,
- Feminine rhyme: Motion, Notion
- Triple rhyme: Fortunate, Importunate

What is the difference between them? In masculine rhyme the


rhyme sound is one accented syllable called strong rhyme; in feminine
rhyme the rhyme sound is one accented syllable followed by one
unaccented syllable; in triple rhyme there are three consecutive rhyming
syllables.

b. What is the difference between initial rhyme, internal


rhyme and end rhyme?

Initial rhyme: the rhyming words occur at the beginnings of lines and
its called head rhyme;
Internal rhyme: Occurs within a line of verse and its called interlaced
rhyme.
End rhyme: Occurs at the end of a line and its called terminal rhyme.

c. How many types of end rhyme are there? Can you find an
example for each type?
There are 5 types of end rhyme:
1. Couplet: He was wearing a big hat,
But it was more like a cat.
2. Enclosed rhyme: Lightening, thunder, all around
Likely we were in my house,
Where I shocked when I saw a mouse,
And suddenly, the rain falls on the ground.
3. Alternative rhyme: I was looking at the sea
Nobody was there with me,
I swam a lot so deep,
Because a dolphin I want to be.
4. Interlocking rhyme: Autumn sends leaves tumbling to the ground,
The sun sinks lower leaving longer nights
Conkers and acorns waiting to be found,
5. Crossed rhyme: The sound flung on the air,
and this song is sung by a bird on the tree.

d. Why can we state that versification contributes to the


meaning of a poem?
Versification is part of the meaning of a poem and it contributes essential
information to a reader about the theme and genre of a text.

e. What is a stanza? What are the most popular stanzas in


English?
A stanza is a collection of lines that together make up a verse paragraph
and it comprises three or more lines of verse.
The most common structural units used in English poetry are the couplet,
the triplet and the quatrain.

(ii) What is the theme of this poem? What is the


poetic persona I doing?
The theme of this poem is that the lovers want to meet each others but they
do it at night.
The poetic persona is crossing the sea at midnight because he need to meet
his love.

(iii) Find adjectives to describe the following sounds.


Now write what images the following sounds bring to
your mind:
1. Voicedless fricatives: /S/ ad /s/
a. soft, hissing sounds
b. the wind blowing, a serpent
2. Voiced lateral /l/:
a. a. Prolonged

3. Voiceless plosives /k/ and /p/:
a. Strong, powerful

a. Slow
b. A rattle.

They used the final part in each lines with rhyme in ea and with this kind
of rhyme they reinforce the action and the emotions involved.
