Proposed Three-Year Budget for 2015-2016/2016-2017/2017-2018

Ithica Elementary consists of approximately 700 students. The media center currently
receives approximately $6,500/year. It is important for the media specialist to present a plan to
administration including how money will enhance the learning of students throughout the school.
I agree with Mrs. Robinson when she stated, It is hard to provide the technology and resource
materials needed with such a limited budget. (personal communication, October 2, 2014)
When preparing a budget it is important to include the input of the faculty, parents,
students, and stakeholders. By providing a survey for them to complete about the needs of the
media program, data can be collected and used to create a budget. At Ithica, it is also important
that the budget supports the teaching of the CCGPS, the School Improvement Plan, STEAM
initiative, and the goal of having a 1:1 technology/student ratio. Here are a few of the
CCGPSs: ELACC3RI10, ELACC3W7: Conduct short research projects that build knowledge
about a topic. ELACC3W8: Recall information from experience or gather information from
print and digital sources; take brief notes on sources and sort evidence into provided categories.
ELACC3W6: With guidance and support from adults, use technology to produce and publish
writing (using keyboarding skills) as well as to interact and collaborate with others. (Georgia
Department of Education, 2014)
Below is a proposed three-year budget for Ithica Elementary based on their needs and goals.

Print Material: Over the past few years Ithica has not been able to weed out due to the lack of
funding for new books. Next year, Ithica plans to take part in the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl.
To support this effort 6 copies of each Georgia Book Award nominated book will be purchased.
The following books will be purchased to support the teaching of the Georgia Standards and the
Common Core: Dear Mr. Henshaw, George Washington's Socks, If You Lived During the Time
of the American Revolution, Quest for the Tree Kangaroo, Revolutionary War on Wednesday/
American Rev set with teacher guide, I Survived the Battle of Gettysburg, I Survived the
Japanese Tsunami, Bull Run, The Last Brother, Charlie Skedaddle and novel guide, Sadako &
the Thousand Cranes, Heroes Don't Run, Wind Flyers, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Out of the
Dust, A Year Down Yonder, The Cay, and Sweet Clara & the Freedom Quilt (to name a few). .
There is also a need for some new high interest books according to students. Many of the
popular books are falling apart or missing.

E-Books: By adding to the Follett Shelf collection that has already been started, students will be
able to read more books on their e-readers without having to go to the library. This will be very
helpful over summer and vacation breaks when they are unable to come to the media center.
Periodicals: At this time periodicals are not available for students to check out. Periodicals
offer informational reading about current events, social studies and science standards, and
promote reading for fun.
Office Supplies: Regular office supplies, book repair supplies, laminating film, magazine
jackets, and ink cartridges need to be purchased yearly.
Software: Green Screen software will need to be purchased for the students to be able to use the
green screen during the morning broadcast, technology club, and individual class use. Apps also
need to be purchased for the iPads. These apps will be used in classes throughout the day, as
well as, in the technology club.
Equipment: The Chromebooks and iPads will help Ithica reach the goal of a 1:1 ratio for
students and technology. It also benefits the STEAM initiative with incorporating technology
into lessons daily. The camera will be used to teach students how to take pictures and videos to
create their own movies. This will be done within the technology club and in the classrooms.
When students are required to take assessments on a computer the
Chromebooks can be used for testing purposes. Students will use this new
technology to perform research, write papers, and create projects. There are
three teachers who are in need of a document camera. Students are able to
share their work with the whole class using this technology. They can also
display pages in a book if reading aloud to the class, which allows them to
follow along.
Audio/Visual Materials: The two new special needs classes are in need of
books on CD. It would be beneficial to purchase a few new titles each year
to help build their collection. This will help students with their reading and
comprehension skills.
