Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl

SEPTEMBER 30, 2014

MRS. HEATHER KINARD

How it all got started

Mrs. Helen Ruffin was a former library media specialist who had a
passion for encouraging students to read. She once served on the
selection committee for the Georgia Childrens Book Award
nominee program. This gave her the idea to incorporate the
nominee books into a unique reading competition. She called it the
Reading Bowl. Her plan was for teams comprised of students from
different schools to come together and compete to test their
knowledge of the selected books.

Books
The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl uses the suggested Georgia
Book Association list of 16 titles (2014-2015) for elementary
schools. All 20 titles are used for the middle school list. In high
school, the Georgia Peach Book Award for Teen Readers
Committee compiled a list of 20 outstanding books for high
school aged students to consider for the annual Georgia Peach
Award For Teen Readers.

Rules
There are five members on a team and up to five alternates.
Each school may only have one team. Each school participates
in six rounds, which consists of 10 questions per round.
Alternates may be substituted between rounds. Teams will
receive 10 points for each answer. There are no penalties for
wrong answers.

Winners
There are 4 competitions: District, Regionals, Divisionals, and
State. At each round, the top 2 schools move on in a single

their school. In the case of a tie, neither team will receive the
trophy that day. Another trophy will be purchased and engraved
and presented to each of those teams at a later agreed upon date.
