A.) Why is this approach being advocated and is being mandated by the Ministry of
education?
Mathematics can be taught in a variety of ways. Some students grasp concepts more easily, while
other students have challenges tackling the subject. It is vital that educators take the personal
responsibility of teaching this imperative subject effectively for all learners.
Teaching mathematics conceptually comprises of a multitude of principles. Learners are
encouraged to build upon ideas and concepts that they are already familiar with. Linking new
concepts and integrating knowledge serves as a holistic way for students to really understand
math. For instance, most students at a given grade level are familiarised with the operation of
multiplication. Despite understanding what this operation entails on a surface level, educators
should use conceptual principles to assists students depth of the operation.
By using manipulatives multiplication can be seen as groupings as opposed to a series of
additions. It can also visually and verbally be applicable to shapes, and speed. Such a diverse
principal must be taught for the student to use in a multitude of ways. Conceptual teaching is
being mandated by the government as it promotes: constructing relationships, extending and
applying knowledge, reflection, articulation and personalization to concepts.
Another reason the ministry of education is highlighting conceptual learning is it equips learners
with understanding the fundamentals of math. By using visuals, and tactile materitals learners are
building a solid foundation to learn. Instrumental learning in math can sometimes be harmful for
learners as they may never fully understand a topic in its entirety. Sometimes this methodology
of teaching math is applied.
B.) Why do you believe some teachers are resisting the approach?
In general, most human beings are creatures of habit. They get comfortable in their ways, even if
in some instances if they are no longer effective or efficient. We live in a fast evolving world that
is dynamic and as educators we must adapt to enable success for our learners.
Educators resist this approach for a multitude of reasons. Firstly, if they have never been exposed
to this methodology of teaching, they may reject the idea all together. Secondly, they may not
have the confidence to properly teach this to students as they themselves have not mastered the
craft.
Certain educators have strong belief that they way they teach is the best and sometimes only way
to teach. As a result novel more effective methods get left out. Teachers also may feel
intimidated, for some they too are learning how to get comfortable teaching this way and this
thought detracts them from employing it to their learners.

As an educator it is important to adapt to the circumstances around us. Although uncomfortable

at times it is necessary to unsure students receive the best possible learning outcome possible.
Some teachers may find student struggling with this teaching strategy and thus avoid it.
