Introduction
Phasor Measurement Unit: A crucial component in Wide Area

Measurement Systems (WAMS)

A hot research topic: Reliability analysis of WAMS.
Reliable and efficient communication system: A must for the

efficient functioning of the synchro-phasor measurement system.

Fiber optic communication, Wireless communication etc. are

some of the viable communication technologies.

Objectives
Communication feasibility analysis of Synchro-phasor data using

Microwave Communication and optical fiber communication.

Reliability analysis of synchro-phasor communication network

architectures and communication protocols.

Develop alternate communication techniques and protocol

standards.

Optimal placement of PMU for minimum BER and for minimum

delay using evolutionary optimization techniques.

Phasor Measurement Unit

PMU uses discrete Fourier transform (DFT) to obtain the fundamental frequency
components of voltage / current (Half cycle or Full cycle)
Data samples are taken over one cycle / multiple cycles.
Currently, sampling is done at 12 samples/cycle (IEEE C37.111 Std.).
Resolution of the A / D converter is 16 bits.

Literature Review
MOHAMMAD SHAHRAEINI,MOHAMMAD S.

GHAZIZADEH,MOHAMMAD HOSSEIN JAVIDI.[1] proposed a method for

co-optimal placement of meters and their communication infrastructure required
for state estimation. Results indicate the superiority of the proposed method over
the conventional methods, which perform this optimization independently.

D. GHOSH, T. GHOSH, D. K. MOHANTA[2] proposed the communication

feasibility analysis of the synchro-phasor data. They investigated the impact of

topological attributes on the commissioning of the wireless communication
networks for the PMUs.

MOUSTAFA CHENINE,LARS NORDSTRM[3]presented the modeling and

simulation of wide area communication for centralized PMU based applications.

They presented the transmission requirements with regard to certain specific
application and focusing on centralized architectural approach.

Literature Review
JIANZHUANG HUANG, N. EVAWU, MATTHEW C. RUSCHMANN [4]presented the

solution for optimal placement of PMU and their communication links, such that the steady
state flow of synchro-phasor data at each bus meets the threshold level.

FARIBORZ HAGHIGHATDAR FESHARAKI, RAHMAT-ALLAH

HOOSHMAND,AMIN KHODABAKHSHIAN,[5]presented a co-optimal

placement of measurement and communication infrastructures in hierarchical
Wide Area Measurement systems. The PMU placement ensured the system
observability as well as its reliability. Special cases of PMU loss and line outages
were considered and analyzed for system observability.

YANGWANG, WENYUAN LI, JIPING LU, HONGHONG LIU[6] proposed a

hierarchical WAMS structure that supports reliable real time data transfer. A two state
model of WAMS regional network has been presented. Protection and recovery survival
mechanisms and their reliability indices have been presented. It is found that the reliability
of the network can be enhanced by suitable placement of the Phasor Data Concentrator and
by improving the availability of a crucial optical fiber link.
