CUSTOMER PRICE INDEX (CPI) OF YAKURR LOCAL
GOVERNMENT AREA CROSS RIVER STATE TO BE
PRESENTED TO THE STATE BUREAU OF STATISTICS IN
CALABAR.
INTRODUCTION
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is an indicator of changes in consumer
prices experienced by Yakurr Local Government Area (LGA). It is acquired
by contrasting, after some time, the cost of a fixed basket of goods and
services purchased by customers. Since the basket contains goods and
services of unchanging or equivalent quantity and quality, the index
reflects only pure price change.
The CPI is broadly utilized as an indicator of the change in the general level
of customer prices or the rate of inflation. Since the purchasing power of
money is affected by changes in prices, the CPI is valuable to all Yakurr.
Customers can compare movements in the CPI to changes in their personal
income to monitor and evaluate changes in their financial situation.
The CPI also has a number of specific applications which are:
It is utilized to escalate a given dollar esteem, after some time, to
safeguard the acquiring force of that esteem. In this manner, the CPI
is generally used to alter contracted payments, for example, wages,
rents, leases and child or spousal support allowances. Private and
public pension programs (Old Age Security and the Yakurr Pension
Plan), personal income tax deductions, and some government social
payments are likewise escalated using the CPI.
It is used as a deflator of different economic aggregates, either of
income flows, to get constant dollar estimates of income, or of
expenditure flows, to acquire personal expenditure at a steady prices.
It is used to set and monitor the implementation of economic policy.
Business analysts and economists analysts utilize the CPI for
economic analysis and exploration on different issues, for example,
the circumstances and effects of inflation, and understanding regional
disparities in price movements.
Price movements of the goods and services represented in the CPI are
weighted by relative significance of products and services in the total
expenditure of customers. Every goods and services is thought to be a
component in a basket representative of customers spending, and price

CONCLUSION
Having done the research on Consumer Price Index for Yakurr Local
Government Area as a group from November 2015 to February 2016 and
we came to a conclusion that November had a deflation of 98.8%, which
then had an inflation of 113.8% on December, going further to inflate on
January 116.64%, and February had a Deflation of 100.25%, in the
consumer price index of Yakurr.
RESEARCH METHOD
As a group, we came up with an opinion that, rather using a secondary
source to make this research we should rather use the primary source,
whereby we could visit different households to get the information that
would be the best for us.
CHALLENGES
Finance: Money was one of the major challenge since carrying out the
research require field work and needs transportation and feeding.
People Resistance: On our field work, people we went out for
questioning where not in any way ready to converse with us, some were
busy doing their activities while others went as far as sending us out of
their environment for trying to get information from them.
Language problem: It was more challenging when it comes to
communication, this is so because majority of the people in Yakurr do not
understand spoken language and that makes it more challenging to get
any information.
HOW WE TACKLE OUR CHALLENGES
We were determine as a team, and we somehow overcame those
challenges by:
Contributing within ourselves to raise our fare for the field work.
We used an indigene who is also part of our group to interpret their
native language.
RECOMMENDATION
Based on our findings so far from the research carried out, it is
recommended that government should regulate the price of goods and
service in the country.
Government should ensure that there is value to the naira which would
help bring down the cost of goods, this is because, if the dollar remains
high, while naira keeps devaluating then too much money would be used to
purchase few foreign goods and that would lead to increase in price.
However, in the course of the research, we discovered that working as a
team and having unity of purpose would lead to positive result and that
determination is the only motivation to perform a given task.
