Objective: Upon completion of this lesson students will identify how

to solve word problems, and rules for multiplying and dividing by 10,
100, and 1000.

Start of class question: 5b page 30. 563-281=342. Borrowing from the

100s position. Solve long hand. Find the error! 282
If all solved correctly go on, if not, let them practice with 59003814=2186, find mistake. Do not just solve question, find where they
did it wrong.
Notes: Word problems: look for key words
Add: total and altogether.
Subtract: have left, more than, less than.
Mathematical sentence: how to write your answer using words and
numbers that specifically answer question.
Example5:page 31. What are we trying to find? Weight, underline it.
What is a key word in this problem? Write problem on board, have them
copy problem in notebook. Circle total and label key word. Put box
around other numbers to pull out important information. Total, what do
we need to do? Add. Write out total: ? (what we are looking for);
weights: 450g, 175g, and 340 g; Remember to put in proper place value
column, explain how this will help them get the right answer, if they
dont line up it is easier to make a mistake. Write final answer in a

sentence to answer question.

Homework: exercise 2A.3 even letters. Let them try #1, on individual
what boards for formative check. Have them write out key word, show
work, sentence. Then try #3 (subtraction question).
Multiplication and division
Notes: to find product of 2 or more numbers, we multiply them. eg.
2*3=6.
To find the quotient of 2 numbers, we divide first number by second
number. The number being divided is the dividend, and the number we
are dividing by is called the divisor. Eg. 63/9=7.
Dividend/divisor=quotient
Multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, and 1000
Write down 1*10=10, 9*10=90, 90*10=900, 900*10=9000. Can you
find a pattern? What rule could you make for multiplying by 10? What
happens if you multiply by 100? What rule could you make? By 1000?
What rule could you make?
What happens if you divide instead of multiply? Change the numbers
around: 90/10=9. What rules could you make for when you divide by
10, 100, 1000?
Discussion: How do you solve a word problem? What rules did we come up
with for multiplying and dividing?

Self-Evaluation / Reflection:
We ended up coming in from recess a bit late, which cut into our math time. The review was good, most got the
right answer for the first question, so I gave them one more which they were able to solve. Went onto word
problems. Through formative questions they were able to solve. The notes had titles so it was clear what we were
working on. We went on to multiplication and division, took notes on the new words. They are able to solve
multiplication and division questions. The terminology may need more work so they can understand what the
questions are asking. I revised their homework for what is due tomorrow, just their review chart. I left time for the
closure at the end: each student had to tell me something about how to solve a word problem since that was our
main focus of today.
I need to print nicer on the whiteboard. I should remind them at the start of class when things are due instead of
later on, that way they will not be worried about it during the lesson.
