Message From Presidente Dayton

One of the Lords Anointed Among Us

We have been blessed to have the presence of a member of the First Quorum of
Seventy among us these last 5 days. Elder W. Craig Zwick presided over the Spain
Barcelona Mission Annual Mission Tour and spoke at two multi-zone conferences, a
Mission Leadership Council, and sacrament meeting on Sunday here in Barcelona.
Sunday evening he had a wrap-up meeting with Hermana Dayton, myself and the
two Assistants to the President. He was very kind and complimentary of the mission,
Elderes and Hermanas. The conclusion that he shared with us was that the Spain
Barcelona Mission was a baptizing and confirming mission, a Lighthouse mission, a
Preach My Gospel mission, and an obedient mission. That is pretty high praise from
someone who knows as much about missionary work as anyone in the Church. We
are very grateful for those kind words by Elder Zwick. And while I may be a little
biased, I am so pleased to say that I agree with him in every way. I am also the first
to say that we cannot sit back on our laurels and bask in self-adulation. Or as Elder
Zwick taught in conference, we can't sit back and purr with smug self-satisfaction.
Yes, we have been blessed to be a baptizing/confirming mission and the Lord has
sent very special missionaries here to build Zion in Spain. However, there is much more
we can do. We all need to stop and reflect on the messages we heard this weekend
from Elder and Sister Zwick and decide, What am I going to do with this wonderful
information that I have received? How will this make me a more powerful, effective
missionary? What can my companion and I do to baptize once every month?
If I were to ask you what is the purpose of the Annual Mission Tour, how would you
answer it? In my mind there are a number of reasons the Lord sends a general
authority to personally visit every mission in the Church. First, there is a tremendous recharging of our batteries that takes place. We are lifted, inspired, motivated,
educated and prepared to be even greater missionaries. Second, I believe they
want to make sure that the doctrine being taught is pure doctrine. Third, it is likely
they want to be sure the policies of the Church are being followedthat missionary
work is being done the way the Lord wants it to be done. Fourth, I suspect it is to help
motivate not only the missionaries, but also to motivate the mission president and his
wife. I hope Elder Zwick left with the strong impression that President and Hermana

Dayton are happy, deeply fulfilled, enthusiastic about the work, loving their missionaries
with the love of Christ, and thrilled to be counted among those involved in this great
cause of bringing souls to Christ. I hope he left knowing that we love missionary work
and we love the members and investigators, that we love the people in Spain, that we
love the wonderful leaders of the stakes, wards, branches, and districts. I believe that
the Annual Mission Tour is going to bless the Spain Barcelona Mission in many ways.
There are some changes coming in the format of the monthly meetings and our
responsibility is to prepared for them and embrace them. We will let you know more
once we get the details.
In the meantime, I would like to ask all missionaries to send in their weekly letter a
summary of the 5 most meaningful things they learned during the Mission Tour. What do
you remember most about the teachings of Elder and Sister Zwick as well as our
teachings. Would you please list 1 through 5 in your letter detailing the 5 most important
things learned and a brief statement about how you will be a better missionary
because of it. You may include it in your letter this week or next. Thank you for taking
the time to do that.
We love you wonderful commissioned missionaries of the Savior more than words can
express. How blessed we feel to proselyte side by side with you in this vital work of
bringing souls to Christ. As we walked into the chapels in Bilbao and Barcelona with
Elder Zwick, I saw the beauty of your countenances, your zeal to learn, your desire to be
righteous, and I was overcome emotionally with how truly good you are in so many
ways. There might have even been a few tears shed. Thank you for all you do to build
the kingdom of God here on earth.
Animado y con deseo de ser mejor misionero,
President Merril T Dayton

Message From Hermana Dayton

Attentiveness vs Distraction

Attentiveness is showing the worth of a person or task by giving our undivided

concentration. Attentiveness is an attitude of readiness to do what is needed.
Being attentive to the words of the Lord in scriptures is one of the most important
ways we can demonstrate attentiveness. Our Heavenly Father speaks to us through the
scriptures. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for
reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness (II Timothy 3:16). We also read in
the Doctrine and Covenants 82:8-9, And again, I say unto you, I give unto you a new
commandment, that you may understand my will concerning you; Or, in other words, I
give unto you directions how you may act before me, that it may turn to you for your
salvation. As we study the scriptures, the Spirit can bring attention to those things that
have significance in our lives. We can receive personal revelation as we feel the Spirit
and ponder and reflect on the words.
Being attentive to the words of the prophets, General Authorities, and those who are
placed over us is also important. Our Heavenly Father communicates His will through
those he calls to preside over us. In Proverbs 19:20 we read, "Hear counsel and receive
instruction, that that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end." I feel grateful as I watch you
listen attentively to President Dayton and then heed his counsel. I know that we are
blessed when we are obedient to our leaders.
There are many ways we can demonstrate attentiveness when another person is
talking. Maintaining good eye contact, sitting up straight, discerning facial expressions,
tonal patterns, and body language, along with taking notes, and asking questions to
clarify show that we are being attentive. Most important, is being attentive to the
whisperings of the spirit.

Attentiveness is much deeper than just listening with our ears, it very often requires that

we listen with our hearts. One of our missionaries recently shared this, "I always
remember the way Elder ______ looked people in the eye, paused after they finished
speaking and then relied on the Spirit to discern what he needed to say. ...Hed watch
with such attention and love that those he taught knew he was there for them. I loved
watching and learning from him and learned the importance of listening to the
investigator and then figuring out how to address their needs." Another missionary wrote,
"I have never had a companion so easy to talk to. I have instantly been able to express
any concerns, any problems, and challenges to her. She has taught me how to truly
listen and to really care for the people here in the mission." I was very impressed by these
two missionaries who wrote about their companions because they themselves
demonstrated being attentive. They observed their companions in action and
they LEARNED from their example. In Proverbs 13:20 we read, "He that worketh with wise
men shall be wise." We can certainly learn so much from others.
President Dayton and I love you and appreciate all you do to bless the lives of others.
We feel grateful to see your growth in the mission as you attentively meet the needs of
the good people in Spain.
Sincerely,

Hermana Dayton

of the Book of Mormon with
him. As he was reading one

This week was great. Really

stressful but we had a lot of
success. We went and did the

the Sant Jordi activity. And we
