WHAT IS

Stress, in language, refers to the

loudness in the utterance of a syllable in a
word or a word in a phrase or sentence.

A speech is poetry: cadence, rhythm, imagery,

sweep! A speech reminds us that words, like
children, have the power to make dance the
dullest beanbag of the heart.
- Peggy Noonan

Basically, we stress only the vowels, not the

consonants. Also, a word has only one stress.
While it is true that there is a secondary stress, it
is relatively smaller or softer than the primary
stress. In short, it is enough that we know the
placement of the primary stress, although our
awareness of the secondary stress and other
stress marks will make our enunciation more
polished.

While there are some rules we need to

remember, it is important to feel the natural
music of the language and not be confined solely
to these rules, for there will always be exceptions.
Even some native speakers do not agree on the
placement of the stress in some words, not to
mention the varieties of accents in English.
Familiarization of the words that are often
stressed incorrectly will be very helpful.
