Technological Competency as Caring

and the Practice of Knowing Persons

in Nursing

Nursing is a discipline and a

in Nursing (2009)

Overview of Theory
Technological competency as caring is
the skilled demonstration of intentional,
deliberate, and authentic activities by
experienced nurses who practice in
environments requiring technological
expertise.
Assumptions
Persons are whole or complete in
the
moment
(Boykin
and
Schoenhofer, 2001).
Knowing persons is a process of
nursing that allows for continuous
appreciation of persons moment to
moment (Locsin, 2005).

Purpose of Technological Competency

4 Phases of Nursing Process

Technological knowing

Knowledge about the person

that is derived from knowing,
designing, and implementing
further informs the nurse and
the one nursed.

Nursing responses are based on

the persons uniqueness

The alternating rhythm of

implementation
and
evaluation.

Verifying Knowledge

Both the nurse and the one

nursed (patient) plan a
mutual care process.

Occurs moment to moment

Deter objectification

Overpowers motivation to
prescribe and direct the
persons life

The entirety of nursing

Is to direct, focus, sustain, and

maintain the person (Locsin, 2005).

Calls and responses for nursing

Designing
CALLS FOR NURSING

Nurses rely on the person for

calls

Knowing persons allows the

nurse to use technologies in
articulating calls

NURSING RESPONSES

Nurses respond to calls from

persons.

Nurses
respond
with
authentic intentions to fully
know persons continually in
the moment.
