Welcome back for the 2000 season. Hopefully you had a productive and refreshing summer. As we begin, you will realize how important your summer was. You should be in the best condition of yourlife, and you should feel recharged and excited about our challenges in BSU's last season in the Big West. It is our mission to make this season the best ever for the program. Accept nothing less than your best from every rep you take. I won't!

Being in college and playing college football is a great experience that you will cherish

for the rest of your life. It is both an honor and privilege to participate in this great span and it ' .. vill build character to last a lifetime.

To help make this an enjoyable experience for all of us, there are some expectations that we must all live up to.

BOISE STATE DEFENSIVE BACKS

The great defensi ve back is an opportuni st. Taking advantage of every opportunity or mi seue by the opponent and making it payoff. He must have a strong desire to play pass defense and welcome the opportunity to make himself the best. There must be a "crusade" like fever that allows nothing to stand between you and your goals.

We must be true Broncos and take pride in our position and what we do in the secondary.

The only way we can be the best is work hard-harder than you ever thought possible. Concentration is the key word in playing football, Jearn what that word means.

You must be determined to give it all up, sacrifice yourself to what you have to do. Always leave the football field knowing you gave more than 100%, never give anything less, if so, you'll just be cheating yourself and your team.

There are many things that contribute to a secondary's success, but by far the 'most important is for all players to be fundamentally sound in the technique of their position. Defense is a combination of aggressiveness, intelligence and enthusiasm. It is CONTROLLED INSANITY.

You must know every move of your opponent to assist your ability to cover. Catch the ball •

at every opportunity, don't knock it down. You must condition your mind to believe that it is your

ball and you must go to get it. Always attack the ball at its highest point. Interceptions and coverage

are the keys to be a great defensive back at Boise State.

Always play the call that is made in the huddle. Don't ever gamble at your teams expense, if in doubt ask questions!!!

A winning attitude and a "want to be the best" attitude, separates the defensive backs Boise State and the rest of the country.

Wanting to "Compete" in everything YOLl do will also make you a better student, a better football player and above all a better person. The challenge of competition for a better grade, playing time will eventually lead to success in life ..

Though secondary DEFENSE vs PASS & RUN can be a highly complex art, the most basic requirements for a defender are:

1. Pride In his ability to get the job done.

2. Desire To be the best at his job.

3. Confidence That when the ball is snapped, you want it to come at you because you have prepared yourself both mentally and physically and you believe you can meet the challenge whenever the ball goes into the air, it is your ball to get.

4. Aggressive Intercept and Hit is your only purpose in this game so get to the football.

5. Poise Never lose it - be cool, you can get the next one.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A DEFENSIVE BACK

1.

Play pass defense, eliminate all passes in your area especially the long pass.

2. Play run defense; make all tackles in your area, ell min ate all long runs and never miss a tackle.

3. Create turnover, interceptions (Money), fumbles.

4. Hard worker, giving a 100% at all times.

5. Attitude, has got to be positive at all times on and off the field.

6. Aggressiveness; to the football will get you to your interceptions, force fumbles, recoveries and big hits.

7. Be loud and firm with your voice, give your call so that all involved could hear the checks that are being made.

8. Use your eyes; recognize all formations, motions and routes ran by the offense.

9. Mentally sound; never blows the call, be in the right area, make the right checks for all motions and formation.

Players: Make all league, All-American, never get beat deep, be defensive player of the week, and always give] 00% every time you're on the field.

TIPS FOR BOISE STATE DEFENSIVE BACKS

I. Always know down, distance, time remaining in the game and position on the field.

2. Try to know speed of receiver.

3. Always go for the ball and intercept it.

4. Good position on the pass receiver is very important-hip relationship,

6. You must constantly talk on defense.

8. Never go in front of receiver unless you can get the ball.
