Group Source analysis

The source is saying that the only way to protect the stability of the state is to limit civil
liberties; strong leadership by one man is the only real answer. This idea of a strong leader being
ideal is supported by the quote, Rule by a strong leader best serves the common good. This
speaker believes that in a democracy the stability of the state is undermined by the protection of
civil liberties. This is because in a democracy civil liberties are intrenched in the constitution,
and therefore can not be over ruled, even if need be.
The speaker mostly likely a supporter of the ideas of facism, as such the speakers
ideological perspective would line up with those of Hobbes, Carlyle and Neitzsche. The speaker
talks about the superman theory, that is that a belief in the idea that one man is born to be great
and lead others to prosperity. Facism believes that there must be a great leader to lead to people
to prosperity. This is an elitist view, because the speaker believes that certain people are superior
to others. This response is a rejection of Liberalism, because it does not believe in equality, nor
does it believe in democracy; In democracies, the need to protect civil Liberties undermines the
stability of the state. The lack of equality, and lack of freedom are both very illiberal, and
therefore the speaker must reject Liberalism.
The source should not be embraced because facism can very easily lead to workers rights
violations. This can include providing unreasonably long workdays, little pay and in some cases
even slave labour. This is very undemocratic and undermines the stability of the state at the same
time by jeopardizing the safety of the state. These abuses are clearly seen in the Facism of Nazi
Germany. The facist idea of elitism allowed for the German people to be convinced that the
Jewish people, Gypsies, mentally ill, and communists were all not human. These people were
sent to concentration camps where they would be forced to slave labour. The conditions in these

camps were simply inhuman, and based off the elitist ideas of the time, these abuses were
promoted by the state.
Another reason for the source not to be embraced is that facism is based off the strength
of the leader. If the leader is morally corrupt the nation can very easily experience, through its
leader, socially unacceptable behaviour. Such behaviour includes xenophobia and violence
towards others. A prime example of xenophobia and violence towards other is the leader of the
Nazi party, Adolph Hitler. As his power increased so did his paranoia. This resulted in him trying
to do everything he could to retain his ultimate power. The Night of Long Knives exemplified
the flaws of the fascist Nazi leader. Hitler was afraid of the power of those within his power and
was paranoid that he would be overthrown or even lose some of his power. As a result he
believed it was best to eliminate anyone that he felt would be a threat. On the Night of Long
Knives he killed the SA leaders so he could maintain/gain control of the SA soldiers. Although
Hitler was considered strong in several ways, several of his flaws were also personified by his
power and as a result the common good was not served.
