Columbian Exchange

The Columbian Exchange was a global diffusion of

plants, food crops, animals, culture, technology,
people, and diseases after the voyages of the
European explorers. What this means, is that
these items were now traveling to different parts
of the world than they had ever been. Before the
Age of Exploration, Europeans did not know that
food like potatoes, corn, and pineapples existed.
The natives of the Americas did not previously
have things like sugar, cows, and many many
diseases. This is one of the first examples in
history of globalization.
There were a lot of things that were good about
the transfer of these items. One good thing is that
the native people were introduced to a lot of
technology (weaponry) and farming techniques
that they might not have seen otherwise. The
Europeans also learned farming techniques and
were introduced to new food crops by the natives.
These new foods helped Europeans to get
nutrients that they couldnt get from food native
to Europe, and therefore were able to be healthier.
Animals were also introduced to new parts of the
world.
There were also a lot of things that were bad
about the Columbian Exchange. The worst thing
would perhaps be the introduction of new
diseases. Diseases from Europe were brought to

the new world by explorers and settlers. Diseases

from the new world were also transferred to the
old world. A lot of native people were also killed in
the human transfer (Europeans who harmed or
killed them).
