DRIVER TRAINING DIVISION

Instructions for PTDE Model Course 101


BEFORE YOU BEING COURSE 101, YOU MUST BE REGISTERED WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF
PUBLIC SAFETYS PARENT TAUGHT DRIVER EDUCATION PROGRAM BY SUBMITTING THE DPS
FORM DL-92 FORM - REQUEST FOR A PARENT TAUGHT INFORMATION PACKET LOCATED AT:

COURSE 101 CONSISTS OF 13 MODULES AND INCLUDES DOCUMENTS TO ASSIST DRIVING INSTRUCTION TO YOUR STUDENT.

CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION 32 HOURS (Modules 1 - 12)


The student will:

Read each Module and complete corresponding worksheets

Review Module content with parent

Take an Assessment for each Module

The Parent will:

Review the Worksheets with the student

Evaluate Assessments and assign a score for Modules

Document dates and times of instruction on the Classroom Instruction Log Record (DPS form DL-91A).

IN-CAR INSTRUCTION 14 HOURS (Module 13)


Module 13 includes 7 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction and 7 hours of in-car observation.

Complete each Modules in-car lessons

Document start times, end times, dates, and instructors signature

Document dates and times for instruction on the Behind-the-Wheel Record Log (DPS form DL-91B)

Complete the Additional 30 hours Behind-the-Wheel Practice Log

Follow the instructional hours per day as stated in the DPS Parent Taught Information Packet.

Texas Parent Taught Driver Education (PTDE)


HOW TO OBTAIN A LEARNERS LICENSE (PERMIT)

Model Course 101

(A teen must be 15 years of age to be eligible to obtain a Learner's License).

CONCURRENT METHOD: If teaching the concurrent method, the


student is eligible to take the DPS written test for a Learners License
after completion of Module 1. The student must then complete the
remaining classroom instruction in Modules 2 through 12, the In-Car
Instruction in Module 13, and the additional 30 hours of behind-thewheel instruction (at least 10 hours at night). (If you choose the
concurrent program and do not complete the entire classroom and in-car
instruction, instructional hours will not transfer to another program/
school.)

BLOCK METHOD: If teaching the


block method, the student is eligible
to take the DPS written test after
completion of Modules 1 through 12.
The student must then complete the
In-Car Instruction in Module 13 and
the additional 30 hours of behind-thewheel instruction (at least 10 hours at
night).

Required Documents to Obtain Your LEARNER'S LICENSE from your local DPS Office:
1. Required forms from Department of Public Safety PTDE Information Packet
2. PTDE 101 Concurrent or Block Method Completion Certificate (Invoice)
3. Proof of Liability Insurance (If teen owns the vehicle)
4. Proof of Identity (example: Birth Certificate, Valid Passport, Resident Alien Card or Texas Identification Card)
5. Original Social Security Card, or Letter from Social Security Office
6. Verification of Enrollment and Attendance Form (VOE), available from your school
7. Proof of Texas Residency - Texas Residency Affidavit and required documents are on the Department of
Public Safety website: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/internetforms/Forms/DL-5.pdf
8. Required fee for Learner License - $16

HOW TO OBTAIN A PROVISIONAL LICENSE


A teen must have a Learner's License/Permit for at least 6 months, be at least 16 years of age, and have
completed all of PTDE 101 Course (32 hours of classroom instruction, 7 hours behind-the wheel instruction, 7
hours in-car observation, and the additional 30 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction [at least 10 hours at night]).

Required Documents to Obtain Your PROVISIONAL LICENSE from your local DPS Office:
1. Required forms from Department of Public Safety PTDE Information Packet (DL-91A & DL-91B)
2. PDTE Course 101 Completion Certificate for Provisional License
3. Proof of Liability Insurance (If teen owns the vehicle)
4. Learner's License
5. Original Social Security Card, or Letter from Social Security Office
6. Verification of Enrollment and Attendance Form (VOE), available from your school
7. Proof of Texas Residency - Texas Residency Affidavit and required DPS documents:

eligible to take the Department of Public Safety's written exams for a learner's
license/permit.

(PTDE 101) was purchased. This document verifies that the above named student
(parent/guardian) chose the PTDE 101's Block Program and has completed Modules
1 - 12 (minimum thirty-two [32] hours of classroom instruction) with a least a grade of
70% and is eligible to take the Department of Public Safety's written exams for a
learner's license/permit.
