6. Discussion
The discussion brings the research report to closure. A well-developed
discussion section makes sense of the research results. This is the most
important section of any research report.
This chapter discusses the finding of the study. The finding of the present study
are compared and contrasted with those of other similar studies. The present study was
undertaken with an objective to assess the effectiveness of STP on knowledge
regarding Dementia among the Nursing student at selected Nursing colleges of Sikar
City.
The present study design was Experimental in nature. The study population
consisted of the Nursing student. Total 50 samples were taken with a Simple Random
sampling technique. For collection of the data, a Structured Quistionnaire tool was
used to assess the knowledge score regarding Dementia among the Nursing students.

FINDINGS
The findings of the study have been discussed with reference to the objectives
with the findings of the study.
The objectives of the study were,
1. To assess the existing knowledge of nursing students regarding Dementia
before administration of STP.
2. To assess the knowledge of nursing students regarding Dementia after
administration of STP.
3. To determine the effectiveness of Structured Teaching Programme by
comparing pre and post-test knowledge scores regarding dementia.

Discussion
4. To find out the association between knowledge of nursing students regarding
dementia and selected demographic variables.
The following are the major findings of the study. Findings of the study presented in
the four sections are as follows:
Section I: Description of sample characteristics in frequency and percentage
Finding of section I shows that , 10% students was found in both the age
group of between 20-22years, 50%(25) students was found in age group between 2325years and 40%(20) students was in the age group more than 25 years. It shows that
70% (35) of students was Male & remaining 30% (15) of students was Female who
participant in the study. The religion distributions of students who have participate in
the study. 100% (50) students belongs to the Hindu religion. Family types distribution
of students. 60% (30) students were from Joint family, 10% (05) students from
Nuclear family, 10% (05) students from Extended family and 20% (10) students from
Single parent family.
Section II: Analysis of data related to assess the pre-test knowledge regarding the
Dementia among Nursing students.
The overall knowledge among Nursing students regarding Dementia. About 70
% (35) of adults had moderate knowledge, whereas 30 % (15) of students had
inadequate Knowledge and none of them had adequate knowledge regarding
Dementia.
Overall maximum knowledge Score of students was 29. The mean score was
15, with standard deviation 2.43 and range from 19-11=08. The mean score percentage

Discussion
was computed and it was found to be 53.57%. From the above results it was found that
the sampled subjects were having moderate knowledge regarding Dementia.
Section III: Description related to the post-test knowledge regarding the
Dementia among Nursing students
About 30 % (15) of adults had moderate knowledge, whereas 70 % (35) of
adults had adequate knowledge and none of them had inadequate knowledge
regarding Dementia.
Overall maximum knowledge Score of Nursing students was 29. The mean
score was 21.8, with standard deviation 1.08 and range from 23-20=03. The mean
score percentage was computed and it was found to be 77.85%. From the above
results it was found that the sampled subjects were having adequate knowledge
regarding Dementia.
Section IV: Analysis of data related to assess the effectiveness of structured
teaching programme by comparing pre test and post test scores
Though it was seen that the post test knowledge scores are more that pre test
knowledge scores. It is essential to put it under statical significance. So suitably the
paired t- test was chosen and worked out. The paired mean difference on knowledge
regarding Dementia before and after structured teaching programme was 8.08*** and
it was statistically significant at p< 0.05(highly significant).
The result undoubtedly confirms that the Structured Teaching Program is
significantly effective in improving the knowledge regarding Dementia among
Nursing students.

Section V: Analysis of data related to determine the association between
knowledge regarding Dementia with their selected demographic variables
of students.
All characteristics are not significant with the pre test knowledge of students
regarding Dementia.

DISCUSSION
The findings of the study have been discussed with reference to the objectives
stated in chapter 2 and with findings of other studies.
The present study was undertaken to assess the effectiveness of structured
teaching programme on knowledge regarding Dementia among Nursing students.
Based on the objectives the investigator tried to evaluate the level of
knowledge

of Nursing students regarding dementia and the effectiveness of

structured teaching programme . The Nursing students had moderate knowledge in

pre test and after administration of teaching the nursing students had adequate
knowledge level regarding Dementia.
All the content areas were higher than the pretest mean percentage
knowledge scores, thus suggesting the structured teaching programme was effective.
The maximum mean percentage gain was higher in the post test.
This study aimed to identify a structure in licensed practical nurses' knowledge
& attitudes towards people with dementia. SIM was developed to improve knowledge
and attitude of nurses. Twenty-one group dwelling units for people with dementia at
11 nursing homes participated in the study. A total of 1577 assessments of 178
patients were sent out to 181 respondents and 1237 answers were returned. The

semantic differential technique & questionnaire was used. The scale had 57 bipolar
pairs of adjectives that estimate an unknown number of dimensions of nurses'
attitudes towards an identified patient. The assessments were analyzed using entropybased measures of association combined with structural plots. The analysis revealed
four dimensions, which related to licensed practical nurses' opinions of the patients:
an ethical and aesthetic dimension; an ability to understand; ability to experience; and
ability for social interaction. The results of the study indicated that, on the positive to
negative attitude continuum, the nurses' attitudes fell at the positive to neutral end.
This is an important finding owing to the personhood perspective, from which it is
reasonable to assume that, with a more positive attitude to people with dementia, the
prerequisites for person-centered care will improve.13
A study conducted by strew hath, 2009 demonstrated significantly higher
knowledge in the post-test following of a structured teaching programme on Dementia
and Delirium. Thus the findings of the pretest study is similar to other finding related
to use of learning materials used for teaching to the Nursing students. This confirms
that the structured teaching programme had a great impact in improving the
knowledge of Nursing students regarding Dementia.
P garwan, evaluated the efficacy of a educational material that is structured
treatment and teaching programme for Nursing students on nursing care of Dementia.
They demonstrated the efficacy and practicality of a structured treatment and teaching
programme for Nursing students on Dementia nursing care in ambulatory health care.
This validates that the health education materials appear to be more effective in the
Nursing students as found in the study.
