Time Allowed: 03 hours

Examination: Final, Spring 2013

Total Marks: 80

NOTE: Attempt five questions. All questions carry equal marks. Mobile phones and other electronic gadgets are
not allowed.

Q1 What are the different types of power diodes? Explain briefly each diode
Q2

a) Draw the structure of Power MOSFET and explain its working with the help of characteristics curve
b) Draw waveforms for two quadrant chopper?

Q3 Using the two transistor model of thyristor, derive the following expression
I + I CBO1 + I CBO 2
IA = 2 G
1 ( 1 + 2 )
Where IA is anode current, IG is gate current, I CBO 1 and I CBO 2 represent leakage current of two transistor and 1
and 2 represent current gain of two transistor.
Q4 Draw circuit diagram single-phase full converter (fully controlled bridge rectifier). Draw the waveforms
for the load current and load voltage. Also prove between that
2V
VdC = m cos

Where Vdc is average output voltage and Vm maximum value of input voltage
Q5
A single-phase fully controlled bridged rectifier is supplied at 120V.Determine the average load voltage
for firing delay angles of 00,450,900. Assuming the continuous load current. Allow a thyristor volt-drop of 1.5V.
If the load resistance is 100 ohms, find also average load current
Hint: 120V represent rms value of input voltage
Q6
A full wave rectifier (uncontrolled rectifier) with center tapped transformer has a purely resistive load of
R. Determine (i) Average load output voltage (ii) Average load output current (iii) rms value of output voltage
(iv) Form factor (v) Peak inverse voltage (PIV) of diode
Q7 (a) What is thyristor? Briefly write down the its working principle.
(b) What is inverter? Briefly explain it.
Q8 Write a short note on any two of the following.
(i) Parallel operation of thyristor
(ii) Application of power electronics
(iii) Function of free wheeling diode
