1. Subject:
a. History/Social Science
2. Teaching Strategies:
a. Read and analyze primary source documents
3. Grade/Level:
a. 6-8, 9-12
4. Topic or Unit of Study:
a. Civil Rights Movement
5. Objective:
a. Students will identify the author, subject, date and intended audience of each of
the documents.
b. Students will analyze the documents by discussing the purpose, point of view and
historical context.
c. Students will compare the content of the document to the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights (UDHR) in order to identify the common themes.
d. Students will critique the mainstream understanding of the Civil Rights
Movement.
6. Learning Context:
a. Students have been introduced to the Civil Rights Movement, and primary source
analysis.
7. Summary:
a. In this lesson students analyze three primary source documents from the African
American Freedom Struggle of the 1950s and 1960s. The first document is from
the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and encourages students to
examine the goals of the march through a human rights framework. The second
and third documents provide examples of the relationship between the human
rights struggles in the United States and in South Africa.
8. Time Allotment:
a. 3 class periods (50 minutes each)
