INTRODUCTION

1.1 INTRODUCTION
This document presents the structural analysis and design report for the proposed
wall/roof mounted GSM antennas at the Wilson Airport in Nairobi County. This exercise
has been carried out by a team of qualified and registered professional engineers, having
been duly commissioned by Tesla Services Ltd.

1.2 THE BRIEF

According to the brief, the proposed GSM antennas comprising of;
Sectors A&B GSM antennas (2500mm long) mounted on a 1m diversity HFrame assembly. Approximate weights estimated as follows;
1. H-Frame, middle boom and stand-offs (Weight 50Kgs)
2. 2No. 2500mm long GSM antennas (Weight 18Kgs Each)
Sector C GSM antenna mounted onto a simple singular assembly.
Approximate weights estimated as follows;
1. Single boom and stand-offs (30Kgs)
2. 1No. 2500mm long GSM antenna (Weight 18Kgs)
shall be installed onto an existing building wall with additional anchor support onto the
roof slab (Refer to appendix 2 for the proposed anchorage layout schematics).
The purpose of this exercise is to;
Consider the resultant equipment and support structure loadings and their
overall structural behaviour.
Analyse the load reaction forces and the implied forces at the proposed
support points.
Prepare a comprehensive design of the support structure.
Output a professional report complete with conclusions and
recommendations to aide the client towards further decision-making.

1.3 SITE LOCATION

The site is located on top of a building within the precincts of the Wilson Airport in Nairobi
County.

1.4 DESIGN LOADING AND REFERENCE CODES

The following loadings were considered in this analysis;
Dead Load (Gk) This is the load resulting from interaction between the
building elements and the downward gravitational pull (Self weight). The
determination of dead loads has been done to BS 8110 guidelines
Live loads (Qk) These are loads resulting from the imposed elements
including human users and all other movable loads. Determination of live
loads has been based on BS 6399 guidelines.
Additional Equipment Loads Determination of the Equipment loading has
been based on supplier catalogues and subjected to factors of safety as
appropriate.

INTEGRITY ANALYSIS

2.1 STRUCTURAL ASSUMPTIONS FOR THE EXISTING STRUCTURE

The following are the assumptions made during this evaluation;
Concrete Class 20 has been used for all structural elements.
Cover to reinforcement is 20mm minimum for all structural elements.
All columns run from roof to the foundations.
All foundations are supported on firm ground with not less than
100Kn/m2 in bearing capacity. It is also assumed that all black cotton soil
was removed from site during construction and replaced with approved
hard core, laid in layers not exceeding 300mm and compacted to 95%
MDD modified AASHTO.
All walls are founded on a continuous reinforced concrete strip footing,
supported on firm ground.
Steel reinforcement bars are of consistent sizing (Diameter) and spaced
to BS 8110 guidelines.
That the structural configuration has been defined in such a way as to
ensure that a localized structural failure does not lead to overall collapse
of the entire building.
The proposed equipment does not in any way contribute to wind loading
surface area, and all horizontal forces are resisted by the building core
elements, also designed as such.
Worst case scenarios for beams and slabs considers simple spans (No
continuities whatsoever)

Calculations

Output

Basing our design on Sectors A&B loading (Worst case);

Proposed total Loads
H-Frame, middle boom and stand-offs (Weight
50Kgs)

2No. 2500mm long GSM antennas (Weight 18Kgs

Each)
Converting mass to force;
1. H-Frame Structure= 0.5KN
2. 2No. GSM antennas = 0.36KN
Factoring the loads by 1.6 (Live loads)
1. H-Frame Structure= 0.8KN
2. 2No. GSM antennas = 0.58KN

Summing moments about the lower boom connection

point;
Sum F(Y) = 0;
Therefore; 1.38x0.75 = F(t)x1
F(t) = 1.035KN
Sum F(x) = 0; which is also equal to F(t) = 1.035KN

2.3 CALCULATIONS SUMMARY

1. The maximum implied load resulting from the
new structure is 2.13Kn; and occurs at node 1
2. The structure is supported against lateral
failure by providing a third support onto the
parapet wall to detail

RECOMMENDATIONS

3.1 RECOMMENDATIONS
Following the detailed structural analysis exercise performed, we hereby make the
following recommendations are hereby made;
That the client proceeds to install the said equipment using the structural
frame detailed under appendix 1 below. The vertical support to comprise
of a 2000mm long, 76x3mm CHS fitted with a 6mm plate at the bottom,
onto which the hold down bolts shall be affixed. The diagonal support to
comprise of a 1350mm long, 60x3mm CHS fitted with a 6mm plate at the
bottom, onto which the hold down bolts shall be affixed. The hold down
bolts to comprise of a minimum of 4No. 12mm dia x 200mm long
galvanized bolts.
The installation of the proposed two poles to be preceded by hacking the
roof slab to expose the existing slab reinforcement, and interlinking this
existing reinforcement with 4No. Y8 vertical bars to detail. These vertical
bars to be then casted into a 200x200x150mm high concrete class 20
footing onto which the poles shall be founded.
Surface penetration at the roof slab to be handled with care as poor
restoration may lead to future rain water leakages. Where such
penetration is done, appropriate approved sealants to be applied to
manufacturers guidelines. Leakage tests to be performed upon works
completion and approved as appropriate.

It is important to note that this report does not in any way affirm the overall
structural integrity of the existing building/structures.
