LESSON PLAN

I.

OBJECTIVES:
- Describe the harmful effects of changes in matter in the environment and how it
causes it.
- Awareness of where and how this effects came from and how it can be prevented
- Investigate what and how to reduce harmful effects to our environment.

II.

MATERIALS AND OTHER RESOURCES.

A. Materials
o Projector
o Video presentation of Ozzy Ozone and other video slides that shows harmful effects of
Changes in matter
o Pictures showing different harmful effects of Changes in matter
o Manila paper
o Pentel pen
B. References:
- Curriculum Guide for Grade 5, 2, 2.1 p. 30, S5MT-Ic-d-2, Science Spectrum 5 p.166
C. Process Skills: Observation, Inference

III.

LEARNING TASKS
A. Engagement
a. Review Past Lessons
1. Ask students what their previous lesson was.
2. Elaborate what they have learned
b. Motivation
- Explain what is the definition of harmful
- Show the student about the short presentation about Ozzy Ozone (Tagalog Dubbed).
- Ask the students to write anything that is harmful
c. Present the new lesson
Today, we will discuss about the harmful effects of the changes in matter and
how it affects the environment.
B. Exploration
1. Ask the pupils to give standards in doing an activity.
2. Divide the class into 3 groups.
3. Instruct the students to write the harmful things that they were able to
collect during the video presentation of Ozzy Ozone.
4. Ask them to also write how was these effect caused and where did it cam
from?
5. Go around and observe the pupils as they perform the activity.
6. Remind them that they will present their output in class after all of the
groups are done with their work.
C. Explanation
1. Each group will present their data and discuss about their interpretation.
Ask:
- How did you feel after doing the activity?
- What happens when change in matter gives off harmful substances in the
environment?
- What will happen if we continue to do this type of activities?
- What kind of change is the most harmful?
- How can we prevent

D. Elaboration

Soil erosion is one form of soil degradation. Soil erosion is a naturally occurring process on all land.
The agents of soil erosion are water and wind, each contributing a significant amount of soil loss
each year. Soil erosion may be a slow process that continues relatively unnoticed, or it may occur at
an alarming rate causing serious loss of topsoil. The loss of soil from farmland may be reflected in
reduced crop production potential, lower surface water quality and damaged drainage networks\
A flood is an overflow of water that submerges land which is usually dry.[1] The European Union
(EU) Floods Directive defines a flood as a covering by water of land not normally covered by
water.[2] In the sense of "flowing water", the word may also be applied to the inflow of the tide.
Flooding may occur as an overflow of water from water bodies, such as a river, lake, or ocean, in
which the water overtops or breakslevees, resulting in some of that water escaping its usual
boundaries,[3] or it may occur due to an accumulation of rainwater on saturated ground in an areal
flood. While the size of a lake or other body of water will vary with seasonal changes in precipitation
and snow melt, these changes in size are unlikely to be considered significant unless they flood
property or drown domestic animals.
Acid rain is a rain or any other form of precipitation that is unusually acidic, meaning that it
possesses elevated levels of hydrogen ions (low pH). It can have harmful effects on plants, aquatic

animals and infrastructure. Acid rain is caused by emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide,
which react with the water molecules in the atmosphere to produce acids. Some Governments have
made efforts since the 1970s to reduce the release of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide into the
atmosphere with positive results. Nitrogen oxides can also be produced naturally by lightningstrikes,
and sulfur dioxide is produced by volcanic eruptions. The chemicals in acid rain can cause paint to
peel, corrosion of steel structures such as bridges, and weathering of stone buildings and statues.
The greenhouse effect is the process by which radiation from a planet's atmosphere warms the
planet's surface to a temperature above what it would be without its atmosphere.[1][2]
If a planet's atmosphere contains radiatively active gases (i.e., greenhouse gases) the atmosphere
will radiate energy in all directions. Part of this radiation is directed towards the surface, warming it.
The downward component of this radiation that is, the strength of the greenhouse effect will
depend on the atmosphere's temperature and on the amount of greenhouse gases that the
atmosphere contains.
On Earth, the atmosphere is warmed by absorption of infrared thermal radiation from the underlying
surface, absorption of shorter wavelength radiant energy from the sun, and convective heat fluxes
from the surface. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere radiate energy, some of which is directed to
the surface and lower atmosphere. The mechanism that produces this difference between the actual
surface temperature and the effective temperature is due to the atmosphere and is known as the
greenhouse effect.[3]
Earths natural greenhouse effect is critical to supporting life. Human activities, primarily the burning
of fossil fuels and clearing of forests, have intensified the natural greenhouse effect, causing global
warming.

Climate change, also called global warming, refers to the rise in average surface
temperatures on Earth. An overwhelming scientific consensus maintains thatclimate
change is due primarily to the human use of fossil fuels, which releases carbon dioxide
and other greenhouse gases into the air.

Ask:
1. What is oxygen?
2. What does it cause?
3. How does oxygen help in using up the food we eat?
4. What is produced when oxygen combine with the materials inside our body?
5. What kind of change happened in the example given?
E. Evaluation/Assessment:
- Write a letter to mother earth.

Ask pupils to write something to mother earth like talking to her. Anything that
comes to their minds telling the bad effects of the changes in matter and how
they can prevent/ lessen this effects and how they will improve the well being of
the earth.
IV.

Assignment:
- Research on the topic of waste segregation and give the meaning of the 3 Rs.
