This story is about Ely, a diligent and smart boy. He is fourteen years old. He lived in a mountainous area. Every day
as he goes to school he pass by in a thick grasses along the path of a cliffy mountain, tall trees with birds chirping on
its branches, and a river with a silent water running over the shining stones. They have hard lives. His father is a
drunkard so his mother who is a vegetable vendor and his brother who stopped schooling to help the family were the
one to sustain the needs of the whole family. Aling Maria, his mother always complain of the wicked attitude of
Mang Lando, her husband. Mang Lando is always drinking and sometimes he beat-up Aling Maria. She is so patient
to hold her temper to the acts of her husband because she doesnt want to break their family. Ely, at his young age
was aware of the hardship and poverty of their family. He just cried silently in his humble bamboo bed katre every
time his parents were fighting.
Despite of this situation, Ely is still a happy person. When he is in school, you always see him talking and laughing
with his classmates. Sometimes they are playing just like elementary grades pupil. Ely is smart and bright student.
When he recite and report in class you can see his self-confidence and his richness of ideas. No wonder he belong to
the top five in their class standing. Also he is a division winner in a certain contest where he got second place. He
brought prestige to the school where he belong.
If you look at Ely you feel pity of his wearing old, faded school uniform, old, tattered bag and old slippers. One of
his teachers brought him those items. His faced brightened with a sort feeling of shy as he received new bag, school
uniform and shoes from his teacher. He is very thankful. He was cared by his teachers because of his being good and
intelligent student. At times he go to school late because of the distance of their house to school. Sometimes he is
absent because he takes care of his younger brother for her mother is out to the town selling vegetables. When he go
back to school his teacher give him task for his missed activities and quizzes.
Ely continued doing good in his studies and their poverty and hardship in life serves as his inspiration; his glimpse
of hope that this poverty could lead him to a successful rich future.

TITLE OF STORY: A HAND OF UNITY
WRITTEN BY: AIRES MAE S. SOLANO, Grade 10-A/ Dr. Ramon B. Legaspi, Sr. NHS

A school which is clean, green, colorful and peaceful is an avenue of learning. It is where learning easily takes place.
It brings an atmosphere of peace, friendship, knowledge and skills, joy and even challenges in the lives of every
student.
How could a school attract student to shelter in its roof and walls?
Every end of summer particularly the third week of May we have a clean-up drive in school a, so-called Brigada
Eskwela Week. This is the time wherein parents, students, teachers, stakeholders and other government agency help
each other to clean the area of the school, repair classrooms, chairs, tables, ceiling etc. I am glad to see that everyone
give a hand of industry, cooperation and unity to prepare the school for the opening of the school year.
I together with my classmates are determined to help in maintaining the beauty of the school. We sweep the ground,
do the weeding, plant flowering seeds, scrub the floor of our classroom and clean the spider webs. Although it is so
tiring we keep on enjoying it because we are working together with our teachers and parents, and of course we enjoy
the snacks donated by some parents and teachers. This routine goes for one week. Our teachers do their tasks also
like re-painting the gate of the school, classrooms, toilets, benches and window grills. I wonder where our teachers
get the budget for all those things for I know that some of them have only few salary because of the loan they have
to meet the financial needs of their family; such as their children who are studying in college, daily needs, medicines
and vitamins of their children and also their senior citizen parents or even tuition for their graduate studies. But still
out of these finances, our teachers make it to meet the needs in school to maintain its beauty. See, how God is
generous to bless our teachers to meet all things needed for the school. And also this was met through the help of the
alumni and stakeholders and LGU or NGO who never tired to donate paints, paint brushes, thinner, plywood, other
materials and even snacks. Others also donated school supplies for some of the needy students.
I salute my teachers, classmates, parents, alumni, stakeholders, barangay officials and NGOs who displayed
cooperation, unity, and support to these program of the department of education to keep each school beautiful, clean,
safe and conducive to learning.
Students are convinced to enroll in our school because of the cleanliness and beautification. Thank you to all who
supported and showed a hand of unity who contributes to the success of the Brigada Eskwela. This is a wonderful
start of the smooth flowing teaching-learning process. For sure students enjoy their stay in every clean corner of the
school.
