2. Task and Design Criteria of Anti Surge Control Valve

The anti surge control valve is required to prevent the compressor from surging.
Surging occurs when the pressure ratio over the compressor gets to high and due to that the internal flow alternates to back flow. This causes a short-time pressure ratio collapse and as a result flow direction in the compressor will alternate again and return to forward flow and rebuild the original pressure ratio as long as the compressor load conditions will remain at the compressor surge line. This will end up in periodical surge cycles with
a frequency of a few seconds and as a result possibly cause damage to the compressor by harmful high vibrations or temperatures, as the complete driver power added to the compressor rotor will be turned into heating of
the oscillating process gas and thereby into heating of the compressor itself.
Compressor surge must be prevented due to safety and economical reasons by a proper anti surge control system (ASC), which in critical cases have highest priority to open the anti surge valve (forced open) maintaining a
positive flow by reduced pressure ratio over the compressor, even if this might cause for a short time waste of
energy and performance reduction.
Safeguarding functions must be monitored by safe guarding system (IPS). For further details of the system
please refer to plant operation manual and operating procedures and other job specific documents by others.

2.2. Design of Anti Surge Control Valve

Ident-No.

23645316

Page 3

The design of anti surge valve shall consider a safe and reliable compressor operation with regard to proper
surge protection and possibly across the most useable performance range.
Limitations of the total compressor envelope shall be taken into account, caused by process safeguards (discharge pressure and temperature limitations) or power limitations of the driver.
Pipe size, piping class, flange types, noise level or leakage requirements and process design (pressure
losses, process cooler design conditions, dynamics, transients etc.) as well as vendor approvals might also affect the valve design and selection.
2.2.1.

Scope

This design description specifies the minimum requirements for the design of an Anti Surge Valve used in a
compressor train. This is only a Siemens recommendation in accordance to known conditions at this engineering status. Final design of Anti Surge Valve has to be done by Process Engineering Department.
2.2.2.

Cv-Value Calculation Flow Coefficient

The flow coefficient shall be calculated in accordance with ISA standard S75.01 "Flow equations for sizing
control valves" (or similar standard).
A useable approach to predefine a proper anti surge valve flow coefficient is selecting the Cvs-value in a range
between 1.8 and 2.2 times the maximum flow at the surge line.
A check of the predefined Cvs-value shall be made against
- minimum (controlled anti surge mode, minimise amount of recirculation at surge line) and
- maximum (possibly full recycle mode at 105% speed and minimum pressure ratio)
requirements.
The final selected Cvs-value should be determined after checking and validating the extremes for all
practical operating cases (specified contractual cases) as well as
theoretical operating cases (informational cases)
with regard to medium composition or suction / discharge pressure or temperature for both, min. and max. calculated flow coefficient (see calculated cases following below).
The selected flow coefficient of the anti surge valve should have a flow coefficient that is higher than the minimum flow coefficient required to prevent compressor surge.
2.2.2.1. Control Valve Calculation
Calculated operating condition cases are:
1. Operating Case Design:

- max. flow on surge line

- mean flow on surhe line
- min. flow on surge line

2. Operating Case Normal:

5. Operating Case A:

2.2.3.1.

Lower Cv Requirements

For the operating case minimum a partial recycle is required. The expected anti surge protection (controlled)
flow is then approx. 30% of the calculated compressor flow at surge line.
At least all contractual cases need to be covered with a proper controllability.
This lower Cv requirements lead to a recommended max. Cvs due to controlability as stated above.
2.2.3.2.

Higher Cv Requirements

Possibly the anti surge valve might be used for full recycle mode (nmax , min. pressure ratio, T=105F).
This case is assumed to be the worst case condition for higher Cv requirements.
2.2.4.

Recommended Flow Coefficient Cvs

In consideration of the calculated flow coefficients cv for all cases and the criteria of optimum control capabilities
(1.8 * cv cvs 2.2 + cv) the recommended nominal flow coefficient is:
Cvs = 160
2.2.5.

Leakage Class

Seat leakage shall be according ANSI B16.104 preferable class IV as minimum (or equivalent DIN class). The
leakage rate needs to be confirmed during FAT.
2.2.6.

Temperature Design

Not considered yet.

2.2.6.1. Process Conditions
Not considered yet. However, it is recommended to keep process discharge volume between compressor discharge and antisurge valve inlet on a minimum to keep risk of compressor surge due to transient effects after a
driver trip on a minimum.

2.2.6.2. Ambient Conditions

Not considered yet.
2.2.7.

Pressure Design

Not considered yet.

2.2.8.

Noise

Please consider predicted noise emissions against specified values. No special provisions for noise reductions
are considered yet (e.g. attenuator plate, noise hood, continous or intermittend operation, piping schedule, sand
wall, installation in compressor hall etc.).
2.2.9.

Fail Function

Valve shall be fail open.

2.2.10. Valve Characteristics
The valve characteristic should be linear.

2.2.11. Stroking Time Full Stroke

2.2.11.1. Safeguarding Mode Forced Open
The opening time from fully closed to fully open in forced open mode shall be 2s maximum.
2.2.11.2. Control Mode
For normal control the opening time from fully closed to the required open position shall be 6s maximum.
The stroking time for valve closing is recommended to be equal to the opening time (max. 10s).
To increase the stroking speed of the valve, volume boosters can be used on the anti surge valve actuators.
The volume booster increases the speed in both the open and close directions.
The above times are recommended to be subject of approval during FAT.
2.2.12. Process Medium Composition
As a standard no NACE conditions and no H2S-content in the process medium is considered.

2.2.17. Accessories
The valve is equipped at least with electro-pneumatic transducer and a limit switch open.
If required a position transmitter can be installed on the valve.
The position transmitter can be wired to the customers control system.
A positioner (SIEMENS SIPART PS2 preferred) can be required in order to ensure that the valve position is always directly proportional to the value of the controller output.
In addition to its primary function, the positioner affords adjustability for valve travel.
