Why is Roderick going out with Ethel? They are very different. Roderick is
almost always punctual, but Ethel is almost never on time. Roderick frequently calls his
friends to ask how we are, but Ethel seldom picks up the telephone. What is worse. Ethel
never combs her hair! But Roderick is always taking care of his appearance. He usually
looks perfect and Ethel sometimes forgets to brush her teeth! Roderick normally enjoys
social events, but Ethel rarely goes to parties. Their relationship will never work out.

Okay, Lilah, just tell me what happened. How did this accident occur?
: Well, sir, I was driving very slowly past the chicken farm. I saw a
chicken in the road, and I didn't want to hit it. So, I put my foot on the
brake.
Did you turn right or left when you were avoiding the chicken?
I turned right, because the chicken was walking in the other direction.
And, did you lose control while you were turning the car, Lailah?
No, I kept control of my car, officer. A truck came from nowhere!
Yes, that truck was carrying the feathers which are in the road now.
That truck hit me. Did I do anything wrong?
You broke the law, Lailah, because you drove on the wrong side of
the road.
But the accident didn't hurt anybody.
That's true. It only hurt the pride of the truck driver. He was planning
to sell chicken feathers that aren't his. He was stealing from the
chicken farmer when you had the accident.
Hmm. I was wondering, Sheriff: Why did the chicken cross the road?
It was looking for a new place to live. The egg company went
broke yesterday.

Hi, This is Michelle speaking. Sorry that I haven't written you any letters for a long time.
I want to tell you what I have done since I finished university last spring. I have been
very busy for the last several weeks. One week after the graduation ceremony, I flew to
Athens, Greece. I spent a week touring the classical monuments and the Greek Islands.
After that, I went to Italy-Sicily, Rome, Florence, and Venice. The art there was
incredibly beautiful. In my third week of holidays, I found myself in Egypt. The
pyramids were spectacular, and the Arabian food was exotic for me. So, since the last
time I saw you, I have seen a lot of Mediterranean culture. From Egypt, I took a boat to
England.

I didn't go to Portugal, Spain, or France because there was not time. I rode around the
British Isles on a bicycle. On that trip, I met many wonderful people: fishermen, sheep
farmers, and other university students. Now, I am staying in Manchester with some
friends. We drink pints in the local pubs, we have tea and crumpets with the
natives, and we exchange jokes. I haven't fallen in love with any of the boys here yet.
But, I love the way they talk, and there is one week until I fly home.

:He has been playing Solitaire on the computer, ma'am. He didn't come
to the meeting.
:Well, tell him that I have been expecting him since 9:30 this morning!
:Yes, ma'am, I have been wondering when you were going to reprehend
him
:Mrs. Bubbleburster, you have been asking for my presence.
:Jones, you miserable, lazy bum! Have you been avoiding work all
morning? My spies have informed me that you have been wasting time
with games since you arrived today.
:That is not true, ma'am! I've been working on the final design for the
soda ad. All of the others have been talking and drinking coffee. They
have not been helping me.
:Well, I have been hearing terrible reports about your work for a month
now.
:But, Mrs. Bubbleburster, you have been listening to malicious rumors. I
have not told you until now. but I have never seen anyone except myself
do work in this agency.
:Hmm, I have been asking myself for many months why production is
low. Well, there will be serious consequences if the rest of the agency has
been lying to me!
:By the way, Mrs. Bubbleburster, what game have they been saying I
play?
:Solitaire. And now I understand exactly what they mean.
:Yes ma'am. Me, too. Now, may I return to my work? The soda company
has been calling about this advertisement all week. I would like to finish
it today.
:Did you have a pleasant talk with the boss?
:Oh, yes! And now she knows that I am the only person who works in this
agency. Or, maybe you would prefer to call me the solitary player.
:Uh-oh!

I can drive now because I have learned how to.
: Okay, Mommy. You can drive to the supermarket.
But, is there anything that you can't do now that you could do when
you were a girl?
: Yes, my son. I could play all afternoon. I could eat peanut butter and
pickle sandwiches, I could hide under my bed, and I could imagine
being a princess.
: What things can you do now that you couldn't do when you were little,
Mommy? Could you cook when you were my age?
: When I was your age, honey, there were many things that I couldn't do.
I couldn't cook, I couldn't read, I couldn't play the piano. But now I

asking students who are good at cooking to help us. A lot of people have
offered their services. Cathy Lucas has brought together people from
the Cooking Club. We have decided to work with them.

parties and they are fun, but it would be great if we could get the permit!

I felt a little worried when my neighbors invited me to come over for a party at their
place. I'm a bit shy and so I imagined all kinds of things about people being extremely
unfriendly with me. What can I say! I'm so insecure! Anyway, everything turned out to
be quite different. There were many people and they were very nice to me. The food
was excellent and plenty of, same as the beer, even though I don't like it very much. I
noticed that there was very little wine and very many different kinds of soft drinks which
are bad for my stomach. The DJ played lots of really good music and everybody danced
all night long. Now, I can't wait for a new invitation from my neighbors!

Hi, I'm Bill. Last summer I was determined to do something about my weight. I looked
really fat. Most of my clothes looked as if they were two sizes smaller, and I was really
lacking energy every time I had to run or go upstairs. On top of that, I was feeling very
insecure and lonely because I wasn't having any luck with the girls at the beach. I started
to feel worried about myself when a friend advised me to enroll in a gym. When I
arrived there, I saw people showing off their perfect bodies. I felt quite envious and
nervous at the beginning, but I started to work out hard every single day. Together with
this, I followed a strict diet and I quit my smoking and drinking habits. A few months
later, I could see the benefits of my new lifestyle. I lost weight, made lots of new friends,
and most important, met my lovely new girlfriend. How can I not be happy about the
results of my efforts?
BUM Track 16 Text
Hello. My name is Lucy Johnson. Let me talk to you about my life. I was born in East
LA, California. I studied at Selby Grove Elementary School and Warren High School. I
played volleyball and baseball. My best friend was Teresa. She was Mexican. We ate
tamales and chilaquiles in her home. After I graduated, my parents sent me on a trip
abroad. I traveled in South America for a couple of months. I visited the Inca ruins and I
learned a little Spanish. I went back to the States and I began to study Archeology. When
I graduated, I got a job in a mission in San Diego: I met Fred, who is now my husband.
He was a teacher at the State University. We bought a beautiful house in the city where
we raised our five kids. Now, I'm a happy granny with several grandchildren.

:I would like to go to a nice place where I can relax and take it easy. I'm a
student, so I'm on a limited budget.
Travel agent: I see. What about the Caribbean? We have some
wonderful destinations now in the low season.
Marvin:
Really? Is it cheaper than normal now?
Travel agent: That's right! For instance, we are promoting Cuba and Jamaica at very
convenient prices.
Marvin:
Great! Tell me about Cuba. I would really like to
practice my Spanish, you know! And Jamaica! I love
Bob Marley!
Travel agent:
Cuba is cheaper than Jamaica. The weather and the
beaches are as good as the Jamaican ones.
Marvin:
What about the food and the people?
Travel agent:
The food is spicier in Cuba and the drinks are definitely better
there. As for the people, Cubans are as friendly as Jamaicans.
Cuban music is faster though. You will enjoy it. I have the feeling
that you would like Cuba better. It would be more interesting for
you.
Marvin:
And more fun I hope! It'll be Cuba, then. Thank
you, miss.
Travel agent:
Excellent. Let's arrange your ticket.
