functions. Complex Integration. Laurent Series between the complex plan and the time response.
Application in the Control and automation problems. Time response of 1st and 2nd order systems.

its influences on performance of circuits with operational amplifier; ideal diode; junction diode and
its terminal characteristics; ruptures of junction and Zener diodes; approximate diode models;
analysis of circuits with diode; small diode signal model; some non-linear applications with diode

of control system; precision, sensitivity and performance criteria. Dynamic properties: stability and
pole allocation; relation between plane S and plane Z; Root Place; Continuous System Tools: Bode
and Nyquist; Continuous Control System Project: frequency methods, place of roots, particular
compensation structures (PID and advance-lag); compensator projects for sample systems: Zdan,
temporal criteria, fixed structure controllers (PID & others).
Laboratory (36 hrs.) - Analysis and project for continuous and discrete systems or real processes

EEL 5191 Electric Drives for Automation: 54h.
Electric Drives: fundamentals of electromechanical power conversion; principles of functioning,
main characteristics (static and dynamic), basic concepts of specification and modeling of electric
machines (continuous current motor, induction motor, synchronous motor, special motors); working principles of static converters (rectifiers, pulsators and inverters); command methods and
basic concepts of specification; general principles of speed and position variators; structures,
models, static and dynamic behavior reducers, performance.
Laboratory (equivalent to 18h): Experiments with electric machines, static converters and speed and

EMC 5236 Measurement of Mechanical Magnitude: 72h.
Metrology within the quality context; reliable metrology: characteristics of measurement systems,
determination of uncertainties of experimental results, qualification of measurement instruments
and standards; transduction, transmission and treatment of signals in measuring instrumentation;
measuring instruments and techniques for mechanical magnitudes, such as: deformation,
displacement, force, pressure, rotation, temperature; industrial application of dimensional
measuring; automation of measurement; structure, metrological and operational characteristics and

EMC 5245 Metal-Mechanical Manufacture Processes: 72h.
Broad concept of manufacture process in metal-mechanical sector; manufacture process with and
without removal of material; machine manufacture processes, mechanical conformation, smelting,
soldering; basic concepts of special manufacture processes: electro-erosion; electrochemical; laser

Discrete Event Systems (DES): concepts, classification, properties, examples. Petri Nets:
definitions, properties, analysis, implementation, Petri Nets in control of DES. State automata
models. Supervisory Control: Control theory for DES, based on automata. Supervisory Systems:
concepts and applications in automation systems.
DAS 5131 Multivariable Control: 72h.
Representation of continuous and sampled systems by state variables. Methodology of analysis and
design of multivariable control systems. Controllability and observability. Canonical decomposition
of linear systems, canonical forms. Relationship between the representation by state variables and
the transfer function matrix; multivariable poles and zeros. Control with the measurable state; states
feedback. Properties: univariate case, extension of results. Concept of state estimator; observers;
feedback control using the estimated state. Separation theorem, introduction to the concept of
dynamic compensation.
Lab: (18 h.) - Use of tools for analysis and design of multivariable systems (PACSC). Application
to physical processes typically multivariable (distillation column, ac motors, etc.).

TCP / IP, interconnection of networks (bridges, routers, gateways), hubs, switches; industrial Local
Area Networks: the hierarchical levels of manufacturing integration in CIM model, characteristics
of industrial networks, standardization projects (Proway, IEEE 802, MAP / TOP, Fieldbus, etc..),
products in market.
CNM 5111 Social and Economic Aspects of Automation: 36 h.
New technologies and the new international division of labor. Industrial automation and industrial
restructuring. The Brazilian technological framework and the new technological requirements.
Experiences with the production of IT in Brazil. Automation and work process: the issues of
qualifying employment. The energy and environmental issues within the process of economic
development.
DAS 5141 Non-Linear systems: 72h.
Importance of the study of nonlinear systems. Mathematical representation: nonlinear differential
equations, theorems of existence and uniqueness of solution. Different definitions of stability.
Analysis by phase plane, singularities, classification. Graphical methods for typical nonlinearities
(saturation, dead zone, delay, etc.). Linear approximation; descriptive function. 2nd method of
Lyapunov; stability domain, absolute stability. Numerical methods for stability analysis. Control of
typical nonlinear systems (temperature, level, etc.).

validation: techniques and methods; diagnostic techniques, detection and signaling of flaws;
recovery techniques; redundancies; alarms; protection; supervision system; safety norms;
prevention and first aid; legislation.
DAS 5315 Distributed Systems for Industrial Automation: 54h.
Distributed Systems: Model Client / Server, RPC and RMI, Communication Group, Name Server
(DNS, X.500, LDAP); Middleware supports, Case Study: CORBA, Distributed File Service (NFS,
