havetotakethetroubleofreadingit.Butithastobesaidthatonecantimaginethatreaderswholackinterestinthescholarlyminutiaewillchooseto
readthenovelsinthisform.
TheToddBreevolumeonthelatermanuscriptsrunstoabout800pages,ofwhichonlysome200arebyJaneAusten.Themostimportant
manuscriptfragmentisoftheunfinishednovelSanditon.AnothersubstantialfragmentistheearlyLadySusan,andathirdisTheWatsons,also
abandonedinmanuscript.Inadditiontolinebylinetranscriptionswhichaddtothebulkofthebookandmaynotbemuchconsulted,exceptbyfuture
editors(ifonecanimaginetheneedforthem),therearesomeprayersofunsettledauthorship,adramatisationofpartofSamuelRichardsonsnovel
SirCharlesGrandison,admittedlyoflittleinterestinitself,andsomepoemsofwhichthesamemightbesaid.The100pageintroductionislovingly
minuteinitscoverageofearlycommentary,andtheannotationsarecarefulanduseful.
