For the love of reading: Little Free Libraries join borough

The two Little Free Libraries are small
boxes offering free books with the promise
of a returned book once finished
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
New houses are popping up on
the Central Elementary School
side of Haddonfield, but they are
more the size of birdhouses; one,
looking like a Victorian house, is
at the Central Elementary School
playground, and the other is at
151 Washington Ave. However,
both of these are no birdhouses;
they are small homes for books
known as Little Free Libraries.
Little Free Libraries are small
boxes where visitors can take a
book for free, encouraging literacy, and return either the same
book or a new book once they are
finished. The libraries, though
not connected in the beginning,
both have the same goal to increase reading and bring the community together.
I think this is an amazing way
to build community and what
(teacher) Michelle Chism did in
her classroom. What we do in
Haddonfield is build a culture
and community of families, students and learners. What better
way to extend our community
than by having this sort of trail
from the school to their house
(with the Little Free Libraries)?
Central School Principal Shannon Simkus said.

Little Free Libraries want to

encourage literacy, the love of
books and neighbors getting to
know each other, which are
things Haddonfield does, Washington Avenue library steward
Margo Kaplan said.
The
Central
Elementary
School Little Free Library was
started as a continuation of the
schools annual fifth-grade class
gift. Each year, the fifth-grade
class is encouraged to leave something to the school that is meaningful and stays within the Central School community. The 2016
fifth graders decided on the idea
of the Little Free Library in
memory of beloved kindergarten
teacher Michelle Chism.
Chism, touching the lives of
many students who walked
through the doors of Central Elementary School, passed away last
year from cancer. She was well
known to be a great teacher, a
cheerleader for her students and
a lover of learning and literacy.
But some of the most important
lessons from Chism are ones students will take way beyond the
walls of the school, ones that
make the community and world a
better place.

Parents Ben Gibson and Margo Kaplan with kids Liam, 6, and Esme, 2, prepare their Little Free Library at
151 Washington Ave. The Little Free Library will be open to the public beginning Oct. 9. Families are encouraged to take a book, return a book and promote literacy.

in our opinion

Only two more debates to go

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033

Were not so sure we could take any more than that

Richard Donnelly

hankfully, there are only two

more presidential debates
plus a vice presidential debate and only about five weeks before a new president is elected. We say
that not necessarily because we cant
wait for either of these candidates to
enter office, but because we, like many
others, are simply sick of listening to
them campaign.
Whether you are for Democrat
Hillary Clinton or Republican Donald
Trump, you can agree that the campaign for this presidency, which still
has more than a month left, has been
ugly.
There have been accusations, critiques, fact checking and even some
name calling at just about every turn.

Your thoughts
What are your thoughts on the
campaigns in the presidential election?
Share your thoughts on this, and other
topics, through a letter to the editor.

Clinton and Trump havent been too

kind to each other. Even when they
were on the stage together in their
first debate, televised to the entire
country, they couldnt play nice.
Trump interrupted Clinton on numerous occasions. Clinton went over
her allotted time once or twice. They
threw insults at each other in roundabout ways, each calling the other a
liar at different points of the night.
This is not what we were hoping to
see. The first presidential debate last

Monday did not make us proud. It did

not fill us with joy.
Instead, it made us a little
ashamed not necessarily that Clinton and Trump are our candidates, but
that campaigning for the top office of
our country has turned into a complete circus.
There are some proposed policies of
Clintons that we like. There are some
from Trump that we like as well. But
what we dont like from either candidate is the path they are taking to try
to get elected.
Its a shame that our presidential
elections have turned into this, but its
something we will have to live with for
another five weeks. Thankfully, Nov. 8
is not that far off.

Supporting Idle Free Zones

Commissioners encourage any gasoline- or diesel-powered
vehicle to be turned off after 10 seconds if the driver plans
to remain at that location for more than 30 seconds
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Haddonfield
commissioners
gave a proclamation at their
meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 27 to
show their support of Idle Free
New Jersey and for the adoption
of Idle Free Zones.
We have been doing this annually to encourage people not to
leave their cars idling when
theyre parked, Mayor Jeff
Kasko said.
Idling cars can cause air pollution. Emissions from gasolineand diesel-powered vehicles contribute to air pollution, including
greenhouse gases, ozone formation, fine particles and a multitude of potentially harmful pollutants.
For every gallon of gasoline
used, the average car produces
about 20 pounds of carbon dioxide. The U.S. Argonne National
Laboratory estimates about 20
million barrels of diesel fuel are

consumed each year by idling

long-haul trucks.
Vehicle owners can avoid producing unnecessary greenhouse
gas emissions and exposure to air
toxins by reducing or eliminating
vehicle idling.
Idling for 10 minutes uses as
much fuel as it takes to travel five
miles. Moving beyond New Jerseys existing no-idling code of
three minutes would significantly
improve public health, air quality
and reduce costs and greenhouse
gas emissions, officials said.
Commissioners supported the
adoption of Idle Free Zones by
government agencies, schools,
businesses and other organizations.
They encouraged any gasolineor diesel-powered motor vehicle
to be turned off after 10 seconds if
the driver plans to remain at that
location for more than 30 seconds,
especially locations such as
school drop-off and pick up areas,
drive-through windows, gas sta-

tions, parking lots and business

centers. Commissioners will be
sure municipal vehicles are
maintained to eliminate any visible exhaust as well as support
broad education of the public
about the health, environmental
and economic impacts of idling
and ways to reduce idling.
They also plan to enforce existing violations and penalties
under the states no-idle code
along with many other ways the
borough can help with gas emissions.
In other news:
Commissioners declared Oct. 5
Walk to School Day, encouraging
not only those who go to school to
walk for health benefits, but also
those who drive to consider the
safety of those pedestrians who
walk on that day and every day.

Overdose awareness
candlelight vigil
By Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli, Jr.
Far too many families in Camden
County have lost
loved ones to heroin
and other drugs that
are fueling our regions current addiction crisis. To honor
them and pay tribute
to their struggle, the
Freeholder Board and
Camden County Addiction Awareness Task Force will
host a candlelight vigil in remembrance of their lives.
The candlelight vigil held in remembrance of those who lost their lives to
drug overdoses will be held on October 8 at 6 pm. in Timber Creek Park
located on Chews Landing Road at
Taylor Avenue in Gloucester Township.
The task force uses numerous outreach opportunities throughout the
year to increase awareness of prescription opiate and heroin abuse
and addiction, and they assist in the
creation of programs to help educate
residents of the resources available to
prevent and treat addiction.
Last week, we hosted the inaugural Recovery Softball Tournament
to raise awareness for those battling
opioid addiction. I want to thank everyone that joined us at Campbells
Field and for those who are battling
addiction by bringing our community
together to focus on prevention and
treatment.
Since its inception, this committee
has distributed over 30,000 pieces of
educational literature throughout the
county, held community awareness
and educational events with over
10,000 attendees, and worked with
local law enforcement to expand
access to medication drop boxes. In
addition, the task forces Narcan/naloxone training program has equipped
over 725 residents with overdose
prevention kits, and provided every
law enforcement agency in Camden

County with Narcan,

resulting in over 700
Narcan saves countywide.
The task force is
made up of students,
parents, teachers,
civic organizations,
medical professionals, public health
providers, law enforcement and religious leaders just to name a few.
We did not limit who comprises the
task force since this is an issue that
touches every area of our community.
As an elected official, opiate addiction is one of my biggest concerns.
Together, from parents to clergy, and
every stakeholder in the county, we
must unite to educate and treat this
life threatening epidemic. We must
all address the rising use of heroin
and other drugs that are ripping apart
our families and killing our residents.
The task force website www.addictions.camdencounty.com helps to
educate residents on the resources
available to prevent and treat addiction. Additionally, the site provides a
downloadable prevention toolkit for
community partners such as schools
and civic organizations to utilize in
their own prevention programs. You
can also follow them on Facebook
at facebook.com/AddictionAwarenessTaskForce and Twitter @CamCoAddiction.

please call our 24/7 toll-free confidential hotline for addiction help at

of an emergency.

Last chance for bird seed purchase

Local residents who wish to
purchase birdseed from the Rotary Club of Haddonfield are
urged to order right away. The
deadline is Saturday, Oct. 8; although Rotary insiders say you
can stretch that by a day or two.
Rotary offers a variety of top
quality seed, at discount prices.
Deluxe Blend is available in two
sizes: 20 pounds at $28 and 40
pounds at $48; Ground Feeding
Plus is 20 pounds at $22; Black Oil
Sunflower is 20 pounds at $28; and
Thistle (Niger) is 10 pounds at $25.
Cakes of suet are also available,
eight packs, each 11 ounces at $22.
Safflower, 20 pounds at $37, is
especially popular with many
bird-lovers. Why? Squirrels don't
like it! Also popular is No Mess,
20 pounds at $42, because it contains no husks, therefore there is
no cleanup.
A special feature of this
fundraiser is that Rotarians
themselves deliver the seed, free
of charge, to customers in the
Haddonfield ZIP Code. Customers
in other towns may pick up their
orders at Wild Birds Unlimited in
Cherry Hill, on or after Saturday,
Oct. 15.
To order by mail, send your list

and check to Rotary Club of Haddonfield, P.O. Box 383, Haddonfield N.J. 08033. To order and pay
online,

service.
Thanks to the support of the
Superintendent Rich Perry and
HMHS Principal Chuck Klaus,
Post 38 has been able to move the
Veterans Day Service from War
Memorial to the HMHS auditorium because of the past experiences with inclement weather
and the possibility of having
HMHS students attend the service. This year, however, HMHS
will not be in session because of
the NJEA Convention. Nonetheless, Post 38 urges our young people and their families to take an
hour out of their schedule to
honor our veterans on their special day.
The program will include an
opening prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, a POW-MIA Flag Ceremony, the Star-Spangled Banner, short readings by selected
Post officers and remarks by Post
38 Commander Jeff Bowman and
Mayor Jeff Kasko.
Haddonfield Memorial High
School is located at 401 E. Kings
Highway. Visitors should proceed
through the main entrance and
through the courtyard to the double doors and then up the stairs to
the auditorium. For those who
can't use the stairs, there will be
signs directing them to the elevator. Questions, please call Tom

Your pain could be

of combinations of
ailments like pinched

and dozens of other
possibilities.
Unless the doctor
identifies the
underlying combination
of problems causing
your back pain and then
prescribes a treatment
regimen specifically
designed for your
unique situation - its
nearly impossible for
him to provide you with
lasting relief.
Thats why many
seniors are told that its
part of growing old
and given a regimen
of injections or
dangerous narcotics
designed to mask the
symptoms, not to truly
repair the underlying

Little Free Libraries located at Central

LITTLE
Continued from page 1
brary to Central School, the Class
of 2016 is seeing her memory live
on in the lives and hearts of students and the Haddonfield community.
We chose this because Mrs.
Chism taught us a love of reading
and spending time with friends.
We hope this helps people become
more interested in reading and togetherness, student Caroline
Potts said.
The Little Free Library at Central Elementary School, 3 Lincoln
Ave., is a Victorian house design
to honor the history of the town,
spearheaded by parents Leona
and Sam McFadden. A plaque on

teacher Michelle Chisms love of literacy, children, sharing and
friendship. The plaque on the library reads, No one reads alone, and
the Buddy Bench, created by Girl Scout Troop 30704, also has a
plaque in memory of Chism that reads No one plays alone.
also has a plaque in memory of
Chism that reads, No one plays
alone.
We put the Buddy Bench and
the Little Free Library together
because people can take a book
and read together. It encourages
friendship, and Mrs. Chism
would have loved this, Potts said.
Not initially connected to the
Central School, the Kaplan-Gibson family also came up with the
idea of adding a Little Free Library to the Haddonfield community. The Gibsons, loving books
and being new to the community,
saw children walk to and from
school in front of their house
every day and thought a Little
Free Library would be a great addition to the neighborhood.
When they shared their idea
with Simkus, both were shocked
to find out they were doing the
same thing, but also delighted
they could share in the experience.
The Washington Avenue Little

Free Library will be open to the

public on Oct. 9. The Gibsons are
hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony in celebration that day at 11
a.m. Everyone is invited to come,
have apple cider and donuts and
grab a book.
Anyone interested in donating
to the libraries may do so, but are
asked to drop off the books to the
Central School Main Office or the
Gibsons front porch to get the
book stamped, as each Little Free
Library has a special stamp on
the books belonging to it. The
books are for children up to age
12.
I want to continue to grow our
library And if other people
hear about this, I hope they will
be inspired to have their own Little Free Library to promote community and literacy within
schools and homes, Simkus said.
I also hope our students will understand this message of giving
back and giving, and how important that is to others.

Sound Wave Treatments for Fibromyalgia

Do You Believe In Miracles? I Do!
My name is Cindy Doolittle, and I
am here to tell my story of a unique office and treatment which CHANGED
MY LIFE after many years of suffering
with the chronic pain of Fibromyalgia
(FMS). I developed Fibromyalgia following a fall and subsequent injury.
Like many FMS sufferers I developed
headaches, fatigue, and irritable bowel
syndrome (IBS), morning stiffness, depression and sleep disturbances. This
condition strikes and estimated three
to six million Americans a year, more
than 85 percent of whom are women.

Before I fell, I owned two businesses,

exercised every day and had never experienced depression. With the onset
of Fibromyalgia, my life changed dramatically. It was a daily struggle to get
out of bed, walk, and to participate in
my activities with my family. I went
to numerous doctors, who prescribed
a variety of medications, tried biofeedback, pain management programs,
and every alternative treatment that

came my way. The years continued to

drain me of my will to live and I became more isolated from my husband
and two daughters.
Occasionally, I would talk with
other Fibromyalgia patients and was
surprised at how widespread the syndrome was and how many people,
once energetic and productive in their
lives, were now disabled. It was my intention to communicate with as many
people with FMS as possible, hoping
that one day someone would give me
the answer.
Unexpectedly, it occurred early one
morning, when after another sleepless
night, I decided to call Virgin Atlantic Airways to inquire about flights to
London. Of course, making that long
of a trip was physically impossible for
me, in spite of dreams of travelling
again. A friendly airline representative greeted me and asked me what
dates I planned on traveling. I sadly
explained to her how difficult it was
for me to travel due to the pain I was
in. As I explained to her the details of
my condition, she listened patiently
and unexpectedly replied, You need
to see a doctor like mine, who treated
me for what was once diagnosed as
lupus, and guess what! I no longer
have it! The impact of her statement
astounded me, as it was now my turn
to listen. She explained how she had
gone to a Chiropractor who specialized in Percussion Sound Wave Spinal
Adjusting, a branch in Chiropractic
called Atlas Orthogonal Chiropractic.
I was then referred doctors in South
Jersey, who are trained and certified to
perform this treatment. Dr. John Sandoz and Dr. Joshua Sandoz, of Sandoz
Chiropractic Center in Mount Laurel,
NJ. I called the office to inquire about
the treatment, at which time, I was
told of the success they had in treating
Fibromyalgia. The doctors asked me
to give them 30 days to experience

a 50 percent improvement in my condition for me to continue under their

care. I was encouraged and thought
that was reasonable, and immediately
replied, Give me 10 percent relief and
I will be there tomorrow!
I assumed that fate had worked its
magic. That I was meant to call the airlines that morning in hopes of taking a
long trip and travel to London. Instead
I was now willing to take a 1 hour trip
to see Dr. Sandoz. I was at the office
the next day, giving them my extensive
medical history. At the conclusion of
my consultation, I received three xrays of my head and neck to determine
if my atlas (the first bone in the top of
your neck that supports the weight of
your head) was properly aligned and
centered over the rest of the spinal column. My x-rays were then viewed and
analyzed mathematically, to precisely
locate the nature of my atlas misalignment (subluxation), and how it was to
be carefully put back into place with a
percussion sound wave treatment!
While lying on my side, the doctor used a percussion stylus, which
sends a painless mechanical vibration
to the specified area of the atlas vertebrae. The treatment took seconds after
extensive analysis of my x-rays, gently
and accurately realigning the position
of my spine without forceful manipu-

lation, which I had received in the past.

Within minutes of the adjustment, post
x-rays of my spine were taken, and to
my amazement, revealed my atlas to
be perfectly level. For the first time in
years, I could grasp the steering wheel
of my car without my fingers cramping. I wasnt sure if I was imagining
things with the hope of another new
treatment, but when Dr. Sandoz called
me that evening after my first adjustment, and explained to me that my
x-rays revealed the treatment successfully realigned my atlas and the rest of
my spine. I was excited and confident
that the relief I was experiencing was
not and accident and it was for real.

I cant believe it, all of the

cramping in my legs disappeared,
and the pink color from
increased blood flow returned
to my formerly colorless toes.
Miraculously, each day I
improved and by the end of one
week, I was able to resume my
early morning walks.

Needless to say, my husband and

daughters have now been to Dr.
Sandoz, and countless other patients,
willing to travel any distance to receive
this treatment. My daughter also
suffered years with migraine headaches
and with chronic insomnia. She too
responded effectively to the treatment
at Dr. Sandoz office, and has a healthy
back and now sleeps without medicine.
For those of you who have suffered
with chronic pain for years, and are
frustrated, and have given up hope to
ever feel well again. I encourage you
to contact Dr. John Sandoz and Dr.
Joshua Sandoz at Sandoz Chiropractic
Center, 2057 Briggs Rd. Suite 204
Mount Laurel, NJ 08054. The phone
number is 856-206-9560. x
I hope this is the last phone call you
ever have to make for relief of the
chronic pain you are suffering with.

Haddon Fortnightly monthly

business meeting is Oct. 28
The General Club of the Haddon Fortnightly will be holding
its October business meeting in
the Haddon Fortnightly Clubhouse at 301 Kings Highway East
and Grove Street on Friday, Oct.
28 at 1 p.m. The program, which
will occur after the business
meeting, is a display and discussion of one members, Barbara
Datto, Madame Alexanders Collection of First Lady Dolls and
hostesses from Martha Washington to Pat Nixon, dressed in their
beautiful inaugural gowns; the
collection stopped after the death
of Madame Alexander in 1990.
The presenter will also be cov-

ering the first ladies gowns from

Rosalyn Carter through Michelle
Obama with pictures. In addition,
the speaker will be sharing little
known facts about the women
who acted as the first ladies of
this country. The Madam Alexander First Ladies Collection was
on display at the LBJ Library in
2013 and is now in its archives,
but you may see them now at the
Haddon Fortnightly while we anticipate the next ball of 2017.
The meetings are free and the
club always welcomes visitors
and prospective members. Light
refreshments will be served. The
club looks forward to seeing you

at the meeting, especially for this

months very unique program.
