This demonstration version of EES will allow you to enter and solve up to 50 equ
ations, but you will not be able to save, copy or print your file. The complete
program can solve thousands of equations. It includes online help, a comprehen
sive manual, many example problems and responsive technical support. Short You
Tube tutorials for EES are available at http://fchart.com/ees/.
Both online help and a manual are provided with EES. The manual can be download
ed from http://fchart.com/ees/. However, the best source of information on usin
g EES for both new and advanced users is the Mastering EES ebook by Klein and Ne
llis. Mastering EES is a 700 page book that provides a comprehensive presentatio
n of all of the features in the Commercial and Professional versions of EES, com
plete with many examples. The book is intended both for those who have never use
d EES as well as for advanced users. It is available as an electronic download i
n .pdf format for $25 from http://fchart.com/ees/mastering-ees.php.
The price for a Single-User Commercial License is $600 including one year of Ins
tant Update and Technical Service. A Single-User Professional License is $1,200
, also including Instant Update and Technical Service. The advantages of the Pro
fessional version are summarized at http://fchart.com/ees/pro-comm-versions.php
. Multi-user licenses are also available; (see http://fchart.com/ees/multiple-u
ser-license.php).
If you are a faculty member in an educational institution, your department may o
btain an Academic/Commercial License for EES for a one-time fee of $US 1,500 or
an Academic/Professional License for a one-time cost of $3,750. Both licenses a
llow every student and faculty member in your department to have a fully working
copy. If you are a student and think EES would be valuable to your education,
show the program to your professor.

EES (pronounced 'ease') is an acronym for Engineering Equation Solver. The basic
function provided by EES is the solution of a set of algebraic equations. EES c
an efficiently solve thousands of coupled non-linear algebraic equations. EES c
an also be used to solve initial value differential equations, do linear and non
-linear regression, unit conversion, unit consistency checking, optimization, an
d uncertainty analysis, and produce publication-quality plots.
A major difference between EES and existing equation solving programs is the man
y built-in mathematical and thermophysical property functions which EES provides
. For example, the steam tables are implemented such that any thermodynamic prop
erty can be obtained from a built-in function call in terms of any two other pro
perties. Similar capability is provided many other fluids, e.g., ammonia, nitrog
en, methane, propane, all common refrigerants, e.g., R134a, R123, R143a and many
others. Air tables are built-in, as are psychrometric functions and NASA thermo
dynamic property data for hundreds of substances. Transport property functions a
re also provided. Thermophysical property functions operate in either SI and Eng
lish units. Additional property data may be added by the user and EES can be opt
ionally used with NIST property programs.
EES provides the capability to do parametric studies. Selected variables can be
included in a spreadsheet-like table. The user determines which variables are in
dependent by entering their values in the table cells. EES will solve the table
to determine the values of all dependent variables. A plotting option is provid
ed to display the relationship between any two variables in the table. The plot
option also provides property diagrams (such as pressure enthalpy or temperature
-entropy) diagrams, bar plots and contour plots in publication quality.
EES offers the advantages of a simple set of intuitive commands with which a nov
ice can quickly learn to use for solving numerical problems. The large data bank
of thermodynamic and transport properties built into EES are helpful in solving
problems in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer. Additional data
can be added by the user as functions (written in Pascal, C, FORTRAN, or EES) o
r in a tabular form, which EES will automatically interpolate. EES provides uni
t conversion and can optionally check all equations for unit consistency. As a
result, EES is can be used to solve problems in any engineering application.
Here is an example of two nonlinear equations with two unknowns that illustrate
how equations can be entered.
x^2+y^3=77
sqrt(X^2/(1+y^(1/3)))=2
