Absolutism & New Worldview
Unit Goal:
The seventeenth century was a time of crisis and rebuilding for Europe. Analyze how the rise of
absolutism and constitutionalism tried to deal with order in Europe, as well as the emerging new worldview
created by the Age of Enlightenment.
Language Objectives:

Define academic vocabulary using both oral and written responses. Explain content material using
complete sentences. Create a thesis and prove it.
Enabling Objectives: Students will be able to.using
1. Identify/define the chapter I.D.s terms and their significance to this unit.
2. Examine the common crises and achievements of the seventeenth-century European states.
3. Analyze the factors that led to the rise of the French absolutist state under Louis XIV, and the decline of
absolutist Spain during the same period.
4. Explain the social conditions of Eastern Europe and how the rulers of Austria and Prussia transformed their
nations into powerful absolutist monarchies.
5. Describe the distinctive features of Russia and the Ottoman absolutism.
6. Report on how the constitutional state triumphed in the Dutch Republic and in England.
7. Discuss the baroque style of art and music and where it was popular.
8. Explain the revolutionary discoveries that were made in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the
intellectual and social results.
9. Discuss the new ideas that emerged during the Age of Enlightenment.
10. Examine the impact the new ways of thinking had on political developments and monarchical absolutism.
