Human Concerns Guest House tour

On September 10, a group of twelve parishioners from our parish
cluster toured the Guest House, a homeless shelter for men, located
at 1216 North 13th Street. They had just completed an addition to
and a major renovation of their original facility. The Guest House
provides shelter to 86 men each night and resources to assist them
in overcoming homelessness, through counseling, housing,
education, and employment services.
Roxy Helmeid, their manager of volunteers, was our guide. Her
compassion, commitment, and enthusiasm were inspiring. Touring
the dorms, we encountered several guests who were gracious and
friendly, as were all staff members we met. One of their newer
programs is the Cream City Gardens located across the street. The
gardens provide fresh produce to the Guest House and the
neighborhood. Guests can work in the gardens and/or attend an
agriculture training program, which provides job training in the
fields of urban gardening and the Green Industry.
Those of us who attended the Year of Mercy tours were very
impressed by the organizations, their facilities, and their missions.
Volunteer opportunities abound. If you are interested in getting
involved please call: Sojourner Peace Center, 414-276-1991; the
Guest House, 414-316-2012.

Volunteers needed to do Communion service
The Visitation Ministry is looking for a volunteer or volunteers who
would be available to do a Communion service at Villa by the
Parkway on 8500 West Mill Road on the second and fourth Mondays
of the month. The service has been done at 3:30PM and usually has
about ten participants. Maybe you could buddy up with a friend
and one of you could do the 2nd Monday and one could do the 4th
Monday. The next time we would need your help would be
October 10, if the schedule continues as is. We are checking to see if
there is a possibility to change the day and/or the time if needed, or
of cutting back to just once a month. If you are interested in helping,
please call Linda Radder at 414-358-4600, ext. 158, or on her cell
phone at 920-889-8685. Thank you for considering this ministry.

Mercy Focus for October 2016: Visit the Sick

For a reflection on our call to Visit the Sick, watch the Jubilee Year
of Mercy Video Series with our Missionary of Mercy, Fr. Ken
Omernick. For the October video, as well as for videos from previous
months, visit www.archmil.org/Our-Faith/Year-of-Mercy/JubileeYear-of-Mercy-Video-Series-.htm.

Mental Illness Awareness Week

In 1990, the U.S. Congress established the first week of October as
Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW). The goal is to end the
stigma associated with mental illness and to ensure better
understanding and access to diagnosis and treatment. The prayers
and actions of both faith communities and secular organizations are
needed to restore mental wellness in America. In seeking Gods
guidance, we can recommit ourselves to replacing misinformation,
blame, fear, and prejudice with truth and love in order to offer hope
to all who are touched by mental illness.
Did you know?
One in four persons sitting in our pews has a family member
struggling with mental health issues.
One in ten children/youth has a serious mental illness condition.
Fewer than one-third of adults and one-half of children who live with
mental health needs receive any level of treatment in any one year.
Sixty percent of individuals with a mental health issue go first to a
spiritual leader for help.

Combined Collections: Church in Mission

Next weekend, the Combined Collections appeal offers us a
wonderful opportunity to help people in need through five important
efforts. Please give prayerful consideration to supporting these
causes: Catholic Relief Services Collection, Catholic Home Missions
Appeal, Collection for the Works of the Holy Father: Peters Pence,
World Mission Sunday (Propagation of the Faith), and The Church in
Central and Eastern Europe. Please mail your contributions
directly to the Archdiocese in the envelopes they provide.
