BSS101623 Energy Efficient Coverage

Introduction
Energy Efficient Coverage

The Multiradio BTS exploits two TX paths needed e.g. for LT DL MIMO, also in GSM with
Intelligent DL Diversity scheme (IDD) and also Antenna Hopping and therefore optimizes
the coverage
Benefits

This feature uses additional Power Amplifiers in Multiradio BTSs that leads to the
following benefits:

Better utilization of 60W or 80W power within RATs

Up to two times better HSPA or LTE throughput

Better spectral efficiency, which is the golden figure of merit in re-farming
Operator may save radio module or more

BSS101623 Energy Efficient Coverage

Functional Description
Feature detail (1/4)

Energy Efficient Coverage feature utilises those antennas and PA's in most efficient way
with IDD transmission

Gain of IDD is 4..5dB in urban areas from which 1..2dB remains as net gain
Number of modulators in Multicarrier BTS are not the main constraint, so IDD would not
spent expensive BTS resources

Antenna Hopping may be used in same way. 1..2 dB net gain means 26..58% savings in
BTS power for the same coverage.

The IDD feature stays usable for Flexi EDGE with Flexi EDGE Double Power license as
currently.

BSS101623 Energy Efficient Coverage

Functional Description
Feature detail (2/4)

Feature gives possibility to enable IDD (Intelligent Downlink Diversity) or AH

(Antenna Hopping) functionality on RFM/RRH working in the concurrent GSM-LTE
mode with 2x2 DL MIMO configured for LTE

Concurrent GSM-LTE mode means that both the technologies share the nominal power of the
same MCPA (Multi Carrier Power Amplifier)

The implementation of IDD/AH requires the same HW configuration as it is for LTE 2x2 MIMO
(2TX & 2RX)

As a result of IDD/AH activation certain gain in 2G coverage can be achieved

In case coverage improvement does not need to be provided to the network the IDD/AH
gain can be utilized to reduce DL TX power on GSM TRXs without coverage
deterioration

10

That saved TX power can be used by LTE, which is sharing the same RF resources with GSM
or

In case TX output power assigned to LTE is not changed and lower TX output power is used
for GSM a certain gain in the total BTS energy consumption can be achieved

BSS101623 Energy Efficient Coverage

Functional Description
Feature detail (3/4)

TX power reduction on GSM TRXs gives extra possibilities on supported carrier

configurations with shared RFM/RRH depends on carrier configuration and allowed
power levels for GSM and LTE carriers (according to GSM-LTE RF sharing feature)

Example of IDD gain utilization:

11

Assumption:
RFM 60W with:
1 LTE 10MHz @ 20W
4 TRXs @ 10W
Assumed IDD gain 3.5 dB TX max power reduced by 3 dB (1 dB step possible with RG301704)
Case 1 LTE uses higher output power:
5 W per TRX used (3dB reduced according to assumed IDD gain) 4 x 5 = 20W (20W savings)
20W can be given to LTE 1 LTE 10MHz @ 40W
Result: 1 LTE 10MHz @ 40W
Case 2 BTS energy consumption is decreased:
5 W per TRX used (3dB reduced according to assumed IDD gain) 4 x 5 = 20W (20W savings)
Result: 20W/60W 33% lower MCPA utilization

Dual TRX usage

dualTrxUsage

TRX

With this parameter you can enable the Double

Power TRX (DPTRX) or Intelligent Downlink
Diversity (IDD) feature for the dual TRX unit. You
can also define 2-way (2UD) or 4-way (4UD) uplink
diversity. Double Power TRX and IDD enabled TRX
reserves two TRX ids. It can be enabled if the TRX
id is odd and the next even TRX id is free.
For Flexi Multiradio, Multiradio 10 and Flexi
Compact site types, Energy Efficient Coverage
license is used.
For Flexi EDGE BTS site types, Licence based
Double Power TRX is used.
