OVER BLACK:
CAHILL (O.S.)
I, Benjamin Patrick Cahill, do solemnly
swear.
FADE IN:
EXT. WEST FRONT - CAPITOL - DAY
Supreme Court JUSTICE WILLIAMS giving the youthful
President-Elect BEN CAHILL the Constitutional Oath.
Standing by, Cahills VP-elect, JOSHUA DENET (20 years
older than Cahill); Cahills wife, SAMANTHA CAHILL.
JUSTICE WILLIAMS
That you will faithfully execute the
office of president of the United States.
CAHILL
That I will faithfully execute the office
of president of the United States...
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. WEST FRONT - CAPITOL - MOMENTS LATER
Cahill giving his inaugural address.
CAHILL
As we walk together now, America, we
arrive at a pivotal moment in history...
DISSOLVE TO:
CAHILL (CONTD)
...Disease, poverty and terrorism
threaten the hope and prosperity of the
global future...
DISSOLVE TO:
CAHILL (CONTD)
...Yet I see in this moment unprecedented
opportunity.
DISSOLVE TO:
Now QUICK FLASHES of Cahills speech, passion growing.

2.

CAHILL (CONTD)
...Forge new partnerships -- Alternative
energy sources -- Health care.
Cahill STOPS. Resets for his finish. Looks out at the
crowd. A few CHEERS as he continues his pause. Then -CAHILL (CONTD)
Today I make a pact with you: If theres
one man suffering because hes hungry; if
theres one woman unable to get medical
care; if one child... is deprived of a
decent education, I will not rest, for I,
too, am suffering. I will do everything
in my power to protect you, because I am
your president, America. God bless and
good night.
As the audience cheers wildly, God Bless America begins
to play. Sam, moved by his speech, kisses him.
CHRIS MATTHEWS (V.O.)
Well there he is. Our new president.
EXT. MSNBC STUDIOS - LATER THAT NIGHT
Commentator CHRIS MATTHEWS talking with journalist ANDREA
MITCHELL. As they watch -ON TV, Cahill at the Presidential Ball. Alongside him,
JOHN VINCENT, Cahills age. S.A.C. MARK TURNER, assigned
to Cahill, follows his every move.
CHRIS MATTHEWS
So who is this Cahill-guy anyway, Andrea,
besides being an Independent? You road
the campaign trail with him.
ANDREA MITCHELL
A whirling-dervish, Chris.
INT. BALLROOM - NIGHT
Cahill shaking hands, conversing.
CHRIS MATTHEWS (V.O.)
Ha! Working-class Baltimore, played
football at Annapolis, saw combat in
Desert Storm; Harvard law; was a father,
lost a son in a tragic accident, came
back fighting and now hes our president.
Why is that?

3.

ANDREA MITCHELL (V.O.)

A lot of reasons, Chris. But mostly, he
connected with the American people as
someone who can help them. And he might.
Chris, Ive never seen anyone so driven.
CHRIS MATTHEWS (V.O.)
Then maybe my question should be: What
drives him?
Cahill looks around the room finds:
SAM -- surrounded by admirers. (Her every step shadowed
by S.A.C. MELISSA BLAKE.) Smile at each other, shrug,
theyre stuck.
ADMIRAL PETER WEBB (Ret.), his wife ELAINE, approach
Cahill, shake hands, very familiar.
WEBB
Mr. President -- how are you, boy?
CAHILL
Admiral Webb, Mrs. Webb, thanks for
coming. Do you know John Vincent, my
Chief of Staff?
VINCENT
You served together, of course, Bens
told me stories. Maam.
WEBB
(to Vincent)
Little advice for your boss? Dont try
to change the world overnight. Tell him
to ease into the job.
VINCENT
(to Cahill, deadpan)
Ease into the job.
CAHILL
(to Vincent)
Thank the Admiral for his advice and ask
if I can call on him at the Pentagon.
WEBB
(with a wink)
You damn well better, Mr. President.
Friendly good byes as the Webbs move off -VINCENT
Think Webb would make a good joint chief?

4.

CAHILL
Put him on the short list.
As Vincent moves off, Cahill, alone, exhales the day.
HAWTHORNE (O.S.)
Enjoying your day, Mr. President?
Speaker of the House JAMES HAWTHORNE appears behind
Cahill. Hawthornes the silver back of the Senate.
CAHILL
Honestly Jim?
Hawthorne nods, knows its tough.
HAWTHORNE
I am gonna miss our little debates on the
Hill.
CAHILL
Im sure well find something to disagree
about.
HAWTHORNE
Lets put it on the books. Hey, Navys
football team looks strong this year.
They still wont stand up to Army -CAHILL
Dont count us out. If Coach Reilly
pulls them together as a team...
HAWTHORNE
Know what their problem is? Navys more
interested in being respected than
feared. No way to win ball games -- with
all due respect.
CAHILL
In my four seasons we never lost to Army - not once -- with all due respect.
Hawthornes about to retort, thinks better of it.
HAWTHORNE
I have a boat. Best spot on the Potomac.
Come see me sometime, Mr. President.
Well chew the fat.
CAHILL
I have an office. Not a bad spot either.
You come see me, Mr. Speaker. Excuse me,
Im going to dance with my wife.

5.

Cahill takes off, leaves a bad taste with Hawthorne.

Webb approaches.
HAWTHORNE
That just the way they serve em up these
days? Overcooked and cocky as all hell?
WEBB
Give him his night, Jim.
HAWTHORNE
Only reason he got elected was because he
played the sympathy card.
WEBB
He talked about it once.
HAWTHORNE
All he needed. He knew everyone else
would drag it out for him, the grieving
father.
WEBB
Youre in a fine state. Why dont you
find your wife and dance with her?
HAWTHORNE
Im not in the mood to celebrate.
WEBB
He isnt the enemy, Jim.
HAWTHORNE
Well see.
ACROSS THE ROOM
Cahill interrupts Sams conversation, pulls her to the
dance floor. Agent Blake speaks into mic. in collar.
AGENT BLAKE
...Helix on the move...
CAHILL
Hi.
SAMANTHA
Hi.
Finally alone. Rests her head on his shoulder.
Photographers snapping FLASH pictures. Agent Turner
shoos them away. Cahill mouths Thank you.

6.

CAHILL
Think anyone would notice if we snuck out
to McNallys for a beer and some pool?
SAMANTHA
Next inauguration? Lets just elope.
Sam notices a gaggle of older, proper WOMEN watching her.
SAMANTHA (CONTD)
Uh-oh, Im getting the evil eye again. I
hear they officially disbanded the First
Ladys Fan Club.
CAHILL
If they cant handle that youre keeping
your job, to hell with them.
She needed to hear that.

Then remembers --

SAMANTHA
Oh, I had a dream last night.
Cahill looks at her, serious.

But its not about that.

SAMANTHA (CONTD)
It was about you.
CAHILL
Was I dressed?
SAMANTHA
Thank God. Because you were old and
shriveled and standing in front of
millions of cheering people.
CAHILL
Why were they there?
SAMANTHA
Im a geneticist not a Freudian
psychologist. But my interpretation:
they loved you. Youre going to be
sooooo good, Ben.
Kisses her.

Appreciates her.

Pulls her close.

Cahill considers the advise.

Gets what theyre saying.

CAHILL
Due respect to my cabinet, Im not doing

HAWTHORNE
A lot can be said about a president by
his first hundred days. This one looked
to the East when weve got far more
pressing issues around the world.
LARRY KING
Terrorism and energy, for instance?
HAWTHORNE
Two good examples, Larry. Instead, the

LARRY KING
Do you like President Cahill?
HAWTHORNE
Terrific man, a bit full of himself these

SAMANTHA (CONTD)
I think we should get away, just us. We
could go to Vermont, stay on the farm a
while and -CAHILL
Sweetheart, first hundred days, I dont
have time.
SAMANTHA
Im thinking your schedules going to be
busy the next four years. Sooner or
later were gonna have to make the time.
Agent Turner enters.
SAMANTHA (CONTD)
Not now please.
Sorry, sir.

TURNER
We have a situation.

CAHILL
Well talk later. I promise.

Kisses Sam, heads out.

Leaving Sam alone, still shaky.

INT. WHITE HOUSE CORRIDOR - NIGHT

Cahill walking down the corridor, Turner in tow. Pass
through CHECKPOINT, two military GUARDS nod them through.
ANOTHER ANGLE - FROM UP HIGH
Watching as Cahill goes.

But WHOS doing the watching?

INT. WHITE HOUSE SITUATION ROOM - NIGHT

Cahill enters, surprised to find General Babbitt, Webb,
CIA DIRECTOR FORD, other MILITARY MEN and WOMEN, Cahills
cabinet. Watching TV coverage of PROTESTORS in Tehran
streets burning American flags, carrying posters of their
slain Ayatollah Rowhani.
CAHILL
What the hell?
SECURITY ADVISOR HASLEM
Ayatollah Rowhani of Iran was
assassinated last night.
CAHILL
Who did it?
SARPA
We cant know, but someone was sure as
hell there waiting to take his place.
Rasheem Abdullah, a hard-liner, and one
of the founders of the terror group,
Mujahedin-e Khalq. He kicked out the UN
weapons inspectors this morning, and tore
up the non-proliferation treaty.
CAHILL
Damn.
SECURITY ADVISOR HASLEM
It gets worse, Ben. The Iranians are
blaming us. Abdullahs buddies overran
the Stanford Oil building, and took 131
hostages, mostly American, 14 Chinese, a
few Russians and Japanese. Theyre going
to... Well...
Motions to Vincent who hits button on remote control.

26.

VINCENT
This aired on Al Jazeera an hour ago.
ON TV
Video CAMERA MOVES down a corridor lined with offices on
both sides. Camera capturing HOSTAGES packed into rooms.
Then footage CUTS to a masked MAN holding a revolver to
an American MANS head. He yells out commands in Farsi.
VINCENT (CONTD)
(reading translation)
America will pay: We will kill one
hostage a day until you release our
people from prisons where they are being
persecuted. America will pay: For
killing our beloved Ayatollah Rowhani.
The masked man EXECUTES the American hostage.
Causing Cahill to jump, the image so disturbing. That
got to him. Vincent freezes the image on the screen.
Cahill, jarred, paces. Gets himself together. Then -CAHILL
Recommendations?
GENERAL BABBITT
Its the unanimous opinion of the Joint
Chiefs, sir, and the CIA, that we flood
the Iranian borders with troops. Boost
our carrier, destroyer, and sub numbers
in the Gulf and effectively string a
noose around their damn necks.
Cahill stays quiet, considers the situation carefully.
CAHILL
How many troops do we have in the region
right now?
GENERAL BABBITT
Seventy thousand. We can add another
sixty in a weeks time. Less to get our
ships in place.
Cahill nods, gets it.

Considers some more, remains calm.

CAHILL
Stanford Oil. Downtown Tehran?
CIA Director Ford nods. Cahill thinks about it. Turns
off the TV, expelling the image of the execution.

27.

CAHILL (CONTD)
We all hate to see Americans killed. But
lets just try to strip away our emotions
for just a minute. I see two separate
issues: a hostage crisis and a diplomatic
crisis. And they require two separate
solutions. First, we need to get those
hostages out. And then we play hardball
with these bastards diplomatically.
GENERAL BABBITT
How would you suggest we get the
hostages? Negotiate with the terrorists?
No.

CAHILL
Go in and get them, General.

GENERAL BABBITT
(incredulous)
A rescue operation?
Babbitt scoffs at the notion. That made Cahill look bad.
Looks around, nobodys with him. Cahill eyes Babbitt.
VP DENET
Ben, just a reminder, 1979, American
hostages held in... Tehran. President
Carter and the CIA send in a rescue team,
nine Americans dead.
GENERAL BABBITT
Tried it in Lebanon too.
Was there a hint of a mocking tone in Babbitts voice?
Cahill turns to Babbitt. The argument becoming theirs.
CAHILL
I know the history, General. But our
militarys far more literate with the
Middle East now than back in 79.
(a beat)
Look, we all know what the outcome will
be if we commit our troops to the region.
And I dont want a war -- not if I can
help it.
GENERAL BABBITT
You really willing to risk the lives of
those hostages?
CAHILL
Theyre already at risk, General.
Babbitt looks like he wants to bite off Cahills head.

28.

CAHILL (CONTD)
By the way, Ayatollah Rohwani was a
moderate, makes no sense that wed kill
him. Have the Mujaedin-e given any
indication why they think we did it?
SECURITY ADVISOR HASLEM
Americas the scapegoat of choice.
DIRECTOR FORD
They claim they caught three US soldiers
inside their borders, sir. One they shot
and killed.
CAHILL
I didnt authorize any presence in Iran.
GENERAL BABBITT
You dont want to know where every one of
our people are. For your own sake.
CAHILL
Ill decide that for myself, General.
Tell me theres no teeth to their
accusation.
GENERAL BABBITT
Not that Im aware of.
CAHILL
I want an option paper for the rescue on
my desk by days end.
Cahill starts to go.
GENERAL BABBITT
Its a bad idea.
VINCENT
General Babbitt, how about showing your
president some respect.
Babbitt trains his eyes like guns on Vincent.
GENERAL BABBITT
I give respect where its due.
Oh yeah?
John.

VINCENT
Maybe you need a lesson --

CAHILL
General, check yourself.

29.

GENERAL BABBITT
Ive worked with four presidents, and you
dont have the experience -CAHILL
Agent Turner, escort General Babbitt out,
please.
GENERAL BABBITT
You cant take me out of this!
CAHILL
I just did.
Cahill gives Turner a stern look.
AGENT TURNER
(to Babbitt)
Sir, please.
Babbitt storms out of the office.
Cahill notices everyone staring at him.
Except his pal Vincent. Cahill leaves.

No one on board.
Vincent follows.

OUTSIDE SITUATION ROOM

Cahill watches Babbitt heading out.
CAHILL
I want his resignation.
VINCENT
I want his nut sack hanging from my rear
view mirror. Prick thinks hes
MacArthur. But Ben, this hostage deal,
this is huge. Its the kinda thing that
makes or breaks presidents.
CAHILL
I dont care about the politics -VINCENT
But I have to, its my job to protect
you. Give it a beat, see what it smells
like in the morning, thats all I ask.
Marisa approaches.
MARISA
Sir, I have a long list of calls for you.

30.

CAHILL
Marisa. The man who was executed, I need
to call his family.
MARISA
Ill get the number, sir.
She goes.
CAHILL
I made my decision, John. In the
morning, Ill likely be busy making a
second call -- and I hope the last.
Cahill takes off down the corridor.

LIGHTS come up. Cahill sees HAWTHORNE. Rises -- doesnt
know what this is, but sure as hell doesnt like it.
Severe -- says to Turner:
CAHILL
Get him the hell out of here.
But Turner doesnt move.
CAHILL (CONTD)
Turner, get him out of here!
As he moves toward Turner, angry, threatening, Turner
draws back and SLUGS CAHILL IN THE STOMACH -- he drops to
his knees, stunned -- cant breathe, cant fucking think.
But this is real.

Very, very real.

Hawthorne gestures to Turner, who collects Cahill and

settles him into a chair -- Cahill stares, wide-eyed,
uncomprehending...
Breathe.

HAWTHORNE
Breathe and listen.

CAHILL
What... is this?
HAWTHORNE
This? This is what has kept America
strong the last sixty years.
Hawthorne looks over his shoulder at a photograph of thenpresident LYNDON JOHNSON. Another of RICHARD NIXON.
HAWTHORNE (CONTD)
You a history buff, Ben? Cause the best
parts they dont print in textbooks.
Take FDR. Secretive man, a visionary.
Knew the inevitable was coming. He saw
the atomic age on the horizon and
realized the stakes were getting too high
for any one man to have control. So...
before he died, he drafted a think tank.
So to speak. Half a dozen players, and
quietly -- legally -- ushered them into
key seats along the chain of command.
And now pay close attention, cause
heres the important part... he empowered
them all with full... national...
command... authority. Effective the day
FDR died.
(beat)
Now here we are today: the faces have
changed, but Roosevelts vision remains.
Cahill struggles to make sense of what hes hearing.
Hawthorne leans in, so his words are heard...
HAWTHORNE (CONTD)
You dont work for the people, Ben.
work for us.

And this countrydve run out of fuel two

Amendment.
CAHILL
So what do you expect me to do... just
sit back and watch?
HAWTHORNE
Yes and no. We dont care who sets the
minimum wage, or if abortions legal...
thats what youre here for. But when we
ask you to tow the party line, hell, even
quarterbacks dont call their own plays
anymore. You just do it.
Cahill considering.
HAWTHORNE (CONTD)
Working it over in your head, I can see
it. How many of them are there? Who can
I trust? Your cabinet? FBI? The
military? Friends, family? They cant
be everywhere. Or can they? Thirtyfive? He wondered the same thing.
Hawthorne gives a Who knows? shrug.

Gonna tell the world, huh? Did you think
youd be doing the country a favor?
CAHILL
They deserve the truth.
HAWTHORNE
The truths a tricky deal.
(holds up $20 bill)
Twenty dollars. Says so right here. But
whats it really worth, a few pennies?
Its just a piece of paper. Its only
worth twenty bucks, because their
government tells them its worth twenty
bucks. We tell them, you and I. Same
with our democracy. Its an illusion,
Ben, but its real to them. You take
that away and poof! This country goes up
in smoke. Youre a smart man, tell me
Im wrong.
CAHILL
That doesnt make you right. You killed
the Ayatollah to sell your war. What
isnt an illusion with you, Jim?
Hawthorne taken aback by that.
HAWTHORNE
Pete Webb tell you that?
CAHILL
He didnt tell me anything.
HAWTHORNE
They got nukes, Mr. President. And the

CAHILL
You shouldve told me.
HAWTHORNE

Cahill doesnt need to respond.
HAWTHORNE (CONTD)
My point exactly.
Hawthorne flicks a look to Turner, who picks up the .38.
Loads a SINGLE BULLET into the gun.
HAWTHORNE (CONTD)
The wheels are in motion. The story of
your death. Its one thatll make the
people weep, and bring a country

Hawthorne nods to Turner. Cahill braces for it as
Turner PULLS THE TRIGGER and CLICK. Hammer hit empty

AGENT TWINING
Whoah, whoah, whoah back up pal.
Gray flashes badge: CIA.
AGENT TWINING (CONTD)
Real impressive, but last time I checked,
we were still on American soil, which
gives you about as much jurisdiction here
as Sherlock Holmes.
GRAY
Whys the FBI investigating a suicide?
AGENT TWINING
The man was a Pentagon employee. But
then you know that. Why does the CIA
give a shit?
GRAY
Whats your name?
AGENT TWINING
Special Agent In Charge Dan Twining.
GRAY
Can we talk in private, Dan?
INT. WEBBS KITCHEN - DAY
No sooner the door closes behind Gray and Twining, Gray
ROCKETS lightening fast knuckle-stab to Twinings

refrigerator.
GRAY
Know the difference between me and you?
On me, this ties a disguise. It only
makes me look civilized.
Gray smooths his tie, bends casually to meet Twinings
bulging, frightened eyes:
GRAY (CONTD)
Last time I wore a suit was my first
communion. Since then I gave up God and
became the kind of government employee
who doesnt get a state funeral. You
catching my drift here?
Twining nods desperately that he is.

Good, thats good. So Im gonna take a

Twining nods desperately that he doesnt mind.

Have you spoken to Sam about this?
CAHILL

FATHER WELSH
The strength of your bond with her is
what kept you two going.

Cahill considers Welshs words.

CAHILL
Hold on.

Whats your name?
CLOSE ON THE MAN
MADIGAN GRAY, eyes locked on Cahills.

CAHILL
Thanks Colonel.
GRAY
Dont thank me. Im under Admiral Webbs

From Camp David, sound of HELICOPTERS taking off.
GRAY (CONTD)
Think we can we hut-two?
Gray heads off.

Cahill wills his body after him.

INT. CAMP DAVID SECURITY HQ - NIGHT

MARINE CAPTAIN

Marine captain hangs up.

This makes no sense.

MARINE CAPTAIN (CONTD)

Sergeant, call off the search teams.
Looks to his men, equally as perplexed.
EXT. TRAIL - NIGHT
Gray leads Cahill down the trail, Cahill lagging behind.
The SPOTLIGHT from a CHOPPER lights the sky. Dogs
BARKING, closing in on them.
GRAY
Those dogs sound hungry, can you pick it
up?
Cahill eyes Gray. Pushes himself. As they cross a wide
creek, Cahill pushes past Gray -- like its a
competition. Not one to be bested, Gray picks up the
pace.

74.

On the other side, Cahill comes out of the water first.

And then they stand still and listen: SILENCE. No
chopper, no dogs. They dont question it, move on.
INT. NONDESCRIPT CONFERENCE ROOM - NIGHT
Hawthorne at the end of the table. A meeting in

FIRST MANS VOICE
I dont see a choice. Its time we took

SECOND MANS VOICE
But if we catch him, and convince him -FEMALE VOICE
We gave him more chances than he

Hawthorne nods.

Weighs heavy.

HAWTHORNE
Those in favor of removal?
FEMALE VOICE
Aye.
SECOND MANS VOICE
Aye.
And as they go around the table, we hear six AYES.
it comes to Hawthorne. Who looks to:

Until

GENERAL BABBITT next to him.

GENERAL BABBITT
Aye.
HAWTHORNE
Aye.
That cinches it.
MANS VOICE
Let me know when hes been eliminated.
Ill initiate the set up for the public.
EXT. FOREST CLEARING - NIGHT
Cahill and Gray emerge.

Hurry to a dirt road.

Where --

75.

A CAR stashed.

An older model PONTIAC.

CAHILL
I expected something a little more hitech. Like a Black Hawk.
GRAY
I expected the president would know
nothing flies within fifteen miles of
Camp David without its ass being shot
down.
Cahill goes to the drivers side -- as if hes going to
drive. But Gray ignores him, gets in the drivers seat
first -- as if there was any question.
INT. CAR - NIGHT
As they drive off down road, Gray looks around, sees no
one following. They made it.
GRAY
(suspicious)
That was too damn easy.

Again.

Cahill not sure what he means.

CAHILL
So you Delta or Ranger?
Gray chuckles, couldnt be any more condescending.
GRAY
Something like that.
CAHILL
Well I appreciate what youve -GRAY
Like I said, just following the Admirals
orders, boss.
Cahills wondering why Grays short with him. Angry at
him. Gray pulls the car onto a more populated highway.
They relax, seems theyve made it to safety.
CAHILL
This was a good thing Admiral Webb did.
Bought him some redemption.
Gray shoots Cahill a look of contempt.

76.

GRAY
Redemption? You guys crack me up. Pete
Webb was... Fuck it, I aint wasting my
breath.
CAHILL
Colonel, what did Admiral Webb tell you
about the nature of your orders?
GRAY
Never been interested in The Whys. Or
Idve blown my own brains out long ago.
I figure Im lucky if ten percent of the
time you guys in Washington get it right.
And I live with it.
CAHILL
Ten percent huh? You dont have a lot of
faith in your leaders.
GRAY
Used to be twenty. But nowadays, hard
times to keep up the faith. Boss.
CAHILL
So you dont even know why youre here?
With me?
GRAY
Oh, I know why Im here. I travelled
fifteen thousand miles to find out why
the hell you set up me and my men on that
bridge outside Tehran?
CAHILL
The Ayatollah, that was you?
(off his nod)
How long have you been working for
Admiral Webb?
Gray looks in his rearview mirror, something has his
attention.
Exclusively?

GRAY
About twelve years.

Cahill feels terrible for him. Grays working for the

shadow government and doesnt even know it.
What?

GRAY (CONTD)
Go on, say it.

77.

CAHILL
Im not sure you want to hear, Colonel
Gray. Id have to tell you the Whys.
And theyre not pretty.
Gray looks at him.

Then back to the mirror.

Where --

REARVIEW MIRROR
THREE HUMVEES come out of nowhere and ride their tail.
GRAY
Son of a bitch.
(realizing)
They tagged you.
CAHILL
Tagged me?
GRAY
Planted a tracking device.
Cahill searches his clothes, feels for it. Finds
nothing, then remembers. Looks at the palm of his hand.
The CHIP inside... Starts to wonder...
HUMVEE #1 pulls up along the right side.
HUMVEE #2 pulls up along the left side.
HUMVEE #3 parks itself right up the Pontiacs ass. And
with traffic thick in front of them, theyre walled in.
As they pass a sign marking the next exit -GRAY (CONTD)
Thats our exit.
The three Humvees parked in formation around them.
THE EXIT -- Up ahead.
Gray rams into the Humvee on his left. A bold,
unexpected move that knocks the Humvee against the
shoulder rail -- causing sparks to shoot everywhere -just as they pass their exit.
Gray slams on the brakes, skids to a stop.
The Humvees do the same, but theyre further down the
road.
TRAFFIC swerves around the Pontiac, to the sides, a few
cars SMASH together. Two into one of the Humvees.

78.

Gray slams the Pontiac in reverse, drives backwards

against traffic, expertly avoiding oncoming cars, makes
it to the exit. Then peels out down the offramp.
The Humvees attempt to follow, but cars slam into each
other, making it impossible. Finally, one Humvee bashing
through the crashed vehicles makes it, takes the off ramp
after them.
EXT. OPEN FIELD - MARYLAND - NIGHT
Gray pulls the Pontiac to a stop, and he and Cahill are
out and running over to -A BLACK HAWK UH-60 HELICOPTER.
Preparing to take off.

Its blades come ALIVE.

can cut it out himself. Hands the knife back to Gray.

SAMANTHA

her hand on her shoulder for support. Sam remembers.
She moves to a phone. Punches buttons. While watching
Scoffield and his men work on the blast door, shaky...
Hi, its me.

And she hangs up.

Cole jumps up to intervene.
HETTRICK

But he doesnt listen.
COLE
Hey man, dont do it. Cmon, this is

One of the militants looks out to his comrade holding a
video camera. Gives him a nod.

The militant lets the man go, as if Cole persuaded him.

The other militant turns the camera on COLE.
The first militant puts the gun to Coles head, faces the
camera, and pulls the trigger.

Cahill steps away from the podium. Turns to face
Hawthorne. Hawthorne steps close to Cahill, yells over
the applause, difficult for them to hear each other.

116.

HAWTHORNE
Bravo, Mr. President. Youre smarter
than I thought. You kept your mouth
shut.
Cahill stays quiet, just stares at Hawthorne.
HAWTHORNE (CONTD)
Iran? Our contingency plans already in
motion. Dont know who you think youre
dealing with.
Hawthorne waits for Cahills reaction. Again nothing.
Silence, the stare starts to unnerve Hawthorne.
HAWTHORNE (CONTD)
You talk about faith. The worlds too
tangled up for them, they dont
understand it anymore. The only faith
they care about is that we keep their gas
tanks filled, so they can go on with
their little lives.
CAHILL
I have faith in something else.
HAWTHORNE
What?
CAHILL
That youre wrong.
HAWTHORNE
See you soon, Mr. President.
hello to your wife.

And say

CAHILL
Say hi to her yourself.
Motions behind Hawthorne: Sam, alive too, staring at him,
canons for eyes. She goes to Cahill.
Hawthorne walks away.
CORPORAL SOROS and COLONEL GRAY making their way across
the floor. Cahill meets them half way.
Hawthorne pauses, watches all this suspiciously.
Soros hands Cahill the FLASH DRIVE. Done. Gray looks to
Cahill. Now what? Cahill doesnt relish what he must
do.
