First of all, lets talk about gravity. Newton published his book Newtons Principia
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophi%C3%A6_Naturalis_Principia_Mathematica) in 1686, in
whichhedescribedtheinversesquarelawrelationshipbetweenthegravitationalforcebetween
two bodies and their distance. Newtons law of universal gravitation
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton%27s_law_of_universal_gravitation) states that two bodies
intheuniverseattracteachotherwithaforcethatisdirectlyproportionaltotheproductoftheir
massesandinverselyproportionaltothesquareofthedistancebetweenthem.Themathematical
expressionforthisrelationshipisasfollows:

Where F is the force between the masses, G is the gravitational constant

for example) then the mass of the first body is the mass of the Earth

and
the
distance
between
them
is
the
radius

IntroducingthenumbersintoNewtonslawofUniversalGravitationweobtain:

From now on, we will call g = 9.8 N/kg = 9.8 m/s2 the acceleration due to the Earths gravity.
(NOTE:theunitsofN/kgareequivalenttothoseofm/s2duetoNewtonsSecondLaw.)

ForourchosenheightofH=10mthefalltimeis1.42seconds.

However, we all know that if we drop a ball and a feather in air from the same height, they
feather will take much longer to reach the ground than the ball. Why is this? Well, we have to
considertheeffecttheairhasonthetwoobjects.

The air offers some resistance to the falling objects, more scientifically known as drag
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag_(physics)). The drag depends on the properties of the fluid
andonthesize,shape,andspeedoftheobject.Itcanbeexpressedbymeansofthedragequation
