Calculating Density
Introduction:
Calculating densities of objects are not that simple. In this
experiment, our goal was to find the densities of water and a solid by
using methods such as, water displacement and calculating the volume of
the solid and water. Density is the quantity of mass per unit volume of a
substance. In this lab, we used a 100 mL graduated cylinder, and a bronze
solid shaped like a cylinder, and a balance to find the mass.
Objective:
To study how water and a solids density compare.
Procedure:
Step 1: Find a dry 100 mL graduated cylinder, a bronze cylinder, and a
balance.
Step 2: Find the mass of the 100 mL graduated cylinder.
Step 3: Fill water into the 100 mL graduated cylinder, and find the volume
and mass it.
Step 4: Take a ruler and measure the diameter, and height of the bronze
cylinder in centimeters.
Step 5: Find the volume of the bronze cylinder with dimensions.
Step 6: Carefully drop the bronze cylinder into the 51.0 mL filled
graduated cylinder, and check how much the water level rose to.
Step 7: Mass the bronze cylinder in the water.
Step 8: Record all the data from Step 2 to 7 and put away the materials.

Information
The 100 mL GC is dry,
and ready for the
experiment.
The 100 mL GC is
filled up to exactly
51.0 mL, and the
mass is more than
100 mL GC.
The bronze cylinders
surface is all rusted.
The water level in the
100mL GC rose to
64.0 mL from 51.0
mL, and the bronze
cylinder looks larger
in the water.

Conclusion:
Since the density of water is less than the densities of the bronze
cylinder, we can conclude that the bronze cylinder is denser than water
when you calculate with both dimensions and water displacement.
