North Korea interfering with GPS signals in South Korea as China relations deteriorate
Daily Telegraph (UK)
1 April, 2016
North Korea is interfering with GPS signals in South Korea, jamming satellite positioning data
as Pyongyang's relations with China also appear to be deteriorating.

Related Geographies:
North America

The South Korean government announced on Thursday that GPS signals in Seoul and
Incheon, the port city to the west of the capital, were being jammed by radio waves from
over the border.

Asia

"We think the disruptive signals are coming from Haeju and Mount Kumgang, but we have not
been able to confirm that yet", an official of the science ministry told Yonhap News.

Korea, Republic of

Two commercial aircraft using Incheon International Airport reported their GPS being jammed
but were able to continue normal operations. There are also concerns over the impact the
attack will have on the South Korean military, which still uses commercial GPS systems in
some of its equipment.
A notice announcing new Internet restrictions banning the use of Facebook, Twitter and other
websites is displayed at an Internet provider's office in Pyongyang, North Korea. North Korea
has officially announced it is blocking Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and South Korean websites
in a move underscoring its concern with the spread of online information. Credit: AP
Intelligence officials say the North has unleashed a barrage of radio waves and attributed the
attack to Unit 121, a 3,000-strong arm of the military that is also known as the Cyberwarfare
Guidance Unit. The unit is believed to have been behind a similar attack that lasted for around
two weeks in 2012.
Interfering with South Korea's GPS system is a relatively minor provocation by the North and
the Seoul government says it remains watchful for more serious acts of aggression .
Perhaps more significant is Pyongyang's hardening attitude towards Beijing, which has been
the North's traditional ally but has clearly wearied of the actions of Kim Jong-un, the North
Korean leader, in recent years.

In documents sent to provincial governments in North Korea and seen by the Daily NK, a
dissident newspaper based in the South, The Workers' Party of Korea criticises Beijing for
supporting United Nations sanctions and calls for the people to deliver a "nuclear storm".

North KoreaCredit: AP
"All party members and workers must join in soundly crushing China's pressuring schemes
with the force of a nuclear storm for its betrayal of socialism", the directive states.
"China has never once been sincere towards the North, especially when its revolutionary
efforts ran into challenges and struggles", it said, adding, "We must not have even the
slightest fantasies about China's intentions.

"We must no longer go easy on the Chinese and instead deal with them equally in order to
change their attitude of taking us lightly", it adds.
The directive indicates that Pyongyang considers China to be an enemy comparable to its
ideological arch-enemies South Korea and the United States.

A transfer ceremony was held on Thursday morning at South Korea'sIncheon International

Airport, about 50 km west of the capital of Seoul.
The coffins and belongings of the fallen soldiers were officially handed over to a Chinese
delegation led by Vice Minister of Civil Affairs Dou Yupei.
The Chinese Ambassador to South Korea Qiu Guohong covered the coffins with China's
national flag, and a brief memorial service was held before the remains were flown home by
a Chinese military plane.
In 2014-2015, South Korea returned the remains of 505 Chinese soldiers, and Thursday's
handover was the third one since 2014.
After the ceremony, Dou told reporters that South Korea and China, in the spirit of
friendliness and practical cooperation, have conducted handovers of the remains of the war
dead three times, which is a reflection of the continued, sound and steady development of the
strategic cooperative partnership between the two sides.
Dou also expressed gratitude for the cooperation and efforts made by the South Korean side,
as well as for the goodwill shown by the South Korean media and people over the handover.
According to an agreement between China and South Korea, the two sides consult every year
on the handover of remains of Chinese soldiers found in South Korea.
The Chinese People's Volunteers (CPV) fought side by side with the army of the Democratic

Seoul, 31 March: South Korea on Thursday [31 March] repatriated the remains of 36 Chinese
soldiers who were killed fighting in the 1950-53 Korean War in the latest follow-up to an
agreement reached by the two countries, the defence ministry said.
The repatriation is the third of its kinds since South Korea and China agreed in 2014 to bring
back the remains of Chinese soldiers who were killed while fighting alongside North Korean
soldiers during the civil war.
From 2014-15, the remains of a total of 505 Chinese soldiers were sent home.
South Korean and Chinese defence officials held a repatriation ceremony at Incheon
International Airport earlier in the day before sending the remains to China.
"The repatriation of remains has become a new opportunity to cleanse war-wrought scars and
to take the friendship between South Korea and China one step further," the Ministry of
National Defence said in a statement.

terminals some with free foot massage machines.
