FIRST GRADE
Mrs. Allen, Mr. Bogey, Mrs. McClellan, Mrs. Scott.....
Many of our first graders have researched a zoo animal and prepared a report to
help us get ready for our trip to the Erie Zoo. We learned a lot while putting these reports
into Power Point presentations.
We are also looking forward to our Walk-Around-Town on June 21st. We get to eat
lunch downtown, visit local businesses and visit with community helpers.
We have enjoyed reading a variety of genres this past month. “Peter’s Chair” by
Ezra Jack Keats is a realistic fiction tale of a little boy who realized that his family is
more important than a favorite chair. Then we read several of the Henry and Mudge
books by Cynthia Rylant, also realistic fiction selections. We found that we enjoy reading
chapter books now. We are now in our last anthology. We read two animal fantasies
and an informational fiction. Our last three selections are all true. The first being
expository nonfiction and the last two were biographies about Alexander Graham Bell
and Ben Franklin. We do enjoy reading a wide variety of books.
In math, we have been working on measuring, adding and subtracting double-digit
numbers, fact families, and fractions. We learned to measure in inches and centimeters.
We can add and subtract vertically as well as horizontally now. We have most recently
been learning about halves, thirds, and fourths.
We have several birthdays coming up soon. Happy birthday to the following
