ABSTRACT.
‘A shape fr a next gencration submarine Ins beea drawn based on a survey
of evilable hiowledge. The seamen for cach detailed portion of the ape are
‘extlained. ‘The nim of the design isto preduce « submarine with minimum
practical resistance and with misinaum water flow ise expecially over the
forward passive sonsr while still carrying out all its normal functions
It assumed the rae of the submanne would be little diferent from the
‘current ese! but may be powered differently end camry diferent equipment.
"The diameter of the hall har beon increased while the lengths boos
decreased compare to the present vesel. It is estimated the comparative
resistance will be reduced by ten perceat. The larger diameter will alow ax
‘extra deck over s portion of the length of the vessel giving greater leitility to
Internal exangements. All openings inthe Bist five metes of the shape have
boas moval deewhcre inching the tompede tubs and interceptor auras, te
ive the smoothest posible fe over the Forward panive neneor
‘The nave shape is derived from a NACA forcbody with a 142 pereent
thidaness-Jength ratio and shows a favourable value ofthe minimum pressure
over its length. The question of achieving natural laminar flow over ths short
length is discussed and found to be posable but is unproven,
