Most of this air pollution we cause results from the burning of fossil
fuels, such as coal, oil, natural gas, and gasoline to produce electricity and
power our vehicles. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a good indicator of how much
fossil fuel is burned and how much of other pollutants are emitted as a
result.

How do cars contribute to air pollution?
Passenger vehicles are a major pollution contributor, producing
significant amounts of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and
other pollution. In 2013, transportation contributed more than half of the
carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides, and almost a quarter of the
hydrocarbons emitted into our air.

What is the effect of air pollution on the environment?
Along with harming human health, air pollution can cause a variety of
environmental effects: Acid rain is precipitation containing harmful
amounts of nitric and sulfuric acids. These acids are formed primarily by
nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides released into the atmosphere when fossil
fuels are burned.
