Migration Roadmap

This document is intended for Customers who want to plan a migration from Content
Manager (CM7) version 7.1 to DB2 Content Manager (CM8.3) version 8.3. The material
in this document should be used as reference for planning your migration. Wed like to
stress that while the material here will help towards an uneventful migration, it does not
provide any guarantee.
Its assumed that you have downloaded the CM8.3 Migration Utility from IBMs ftp site.
Following are the steps involved in a successful migration:
1. Reading Required: As a first step we highly recommend that you study the
following material:
Migration Guide
Migration Red Book
CM 8.2 - 8.3 Performance Tuning Guide
2. Skills Required: During migration the following skills would be absolutely needed:
Database Administrator
System Administrator
Content Manager Administrator
Client Application Testers
3. Migration Project Plan: Its highly recommended that you create a project plan for
your entire migration. For your convenience a sample project plan has been added
to the Migration Guide. Use that as is or enhance it as it fits your need.
4. Participate in the MAR process: To help alleviate problems during migration a
Migration Assessment Review process has been defined. By participating in this
process you get helpful insights into the migration process and expert advice on
performance tuning. Contact your IBM representative or IBM business partner to
get started on the MAR process.
5. Test environment: The importance of having a test environment cannot be stressed
enough. The test environment should be as close a replica of the production
environment as possible. This would help to reduce the chance of surprises during
migration of the production environment. Once your test environment is setup
identical to the production environment
a) Test the migration process, (i.e. migrate your CM7 data using the Migration
Utility to your CM8 system)
b) Verify if the migrated ACL and Privileges function as designed in your CM7
system
c) Test your client application against the migrated CM8 system.

While testing the migration process if the total time taken does not fall within
your acceptable norms, tune your Operating System, Database and retest the
migration process. If you experience other non-Performance related issues, take
appropriate corrective actions and re-test migration.
6. Gather Statistics: During the test migration we recommend that the following
statistics be gathered:
Time taken for migration GUI to complete
Time taken for Library Server (LS) import
Time taken for Object Server export
Time taken for Resource Manager (RM) import
Final size of CM8 LS and RM database
Total size of export generated .DEL files
7. Production Data Migration: Once the migration of your data in the test
environment is completed and the total time taken falls within your acceptable
norms, then you are ready for production data migration.
Migration Roadmap Flowchart: To elucidate how each step in the roadmap is linked to
one another a flowchart has been provided. To experience a less challenging migration
please follow the flowchart from end to end.
