To determine the size(Tonnage capacity) of an Air Conditioner?

Factors that determines the size(or tonnage capacity) of the Air-conditioner

The cooling capacity of an air conditioner is measured in British Thermal Units

(BTU).
The capacity you require depends mostly on the size of the room you need to cool.
If you buy an air conditioner that is too small for the room it will not
cool adequately.
If you buy one that is too large, the air conditioner will cool the room before
it dehumidifies and this can leave you feeling clammy.
For larger areas, sometimes two smaller units are more efficient than 1 large unit.
How to measure size of your room:

Determine the square footage of the area to be cooled using the following
formulas:
For square and rectangular rooms, multiply the length of the area by its width
For a triangular area, multiply the length of the area by the width and divide by 2.
If the shape of your room is other than square or rectangular, ask your sales
associate to help you determine the square footage.
Using the square footage and the chart below, determine the correct cooling
capacity. Cooling capacity is measured in British thermal units (BTUs) per hour.

Some exceptions :

If the room is heavily shaded, reduce capacity by 10 percent.

If the room is very sunny, increase capacity by 10 percent.

If more than two people regularly occupy the room, add 600 BTUs for each
additional person.
If the unit is used in a kitchen, increase capacity by 4,000 BTUs.
Consider where you install the unit. If you are mounting an air conditioner near the
corner of a room, look for a unit that can send the airflow in the right direction.
If you are trying to convert the cooling load removal capability of an air-conditioning compressor driven by a one hp
motor, the answer is as follows:
1 hp is approximately equal to 1 ton of air-conditioning
1 ton is equal to 12,000 btuh.
A 12,000 BTU/Hr unit is therefore a 1HP unit.
1 hp = 2546.6 BTU/h
1 hp = 0.7457 kW
1 ton refrigerating = 3.519 kW
1 kW = 3415.2 BTU/h
ACs are rated in BTU/hour, not in BTU, although it is sometimes stated incorrectly.
1 HP = 2545 BTU/hour
1 kW = 3412 BTU/hour
1 kW = 1.34 HP
