Pinoyrock,orFilipinorock,isthebrandofrockmusic
producedinthePhilippinesorbyFilipinos.Ithasbecomeas
diverseastherockmusicgenreitself,andbandsadoptingthis
stylearenowfurtherclassifiedundermorespecificgenresor
combinationsofgenreslikealternativerock,postgrunge,
ethnic,newwave,poprock,punkrock,funk,reggae,heavy
metal,ska,andrecently,indie.Becausethesegenresare
generallyconsideredtofallunderthebroadrockmusiccategory,
Pinoyrockmaybemorespecificallydefinedasrockmusicwith
Filipinoculturalsensibilities.ItisveryeasytoidentifyaPinoy
rocksongbecausethelyricsareofteninFilipino,Tagalog,or
anyotherlanguagenativetothePhilippines.

1960s:Earlyyears
Intheearly1960s,aselectricinstrumentsandnewtechnologybecameavailable,instrumentalAmericanand
BritishbandslikeTheShadowsandTheVenturesflourished.In1963,duringtheBritishInvasion,bandssuchas
TheBeatlesrosetomainstreamaudiencesworldwide.Theirwidespreadpopularityandtheirembraceofthe
countercultureinjectedthepossibilityofsociopoliticallyricswithmaturecommentsonreallifeintopopular
music.ImmenselyinfluencedbythisnewbreedofBritishartists,manyFilipinobandsbeganadoptingsimilar
musicalstyles.
OneofthefirstpopularFilipinoballerinaswasBobbyGonzales,whosemajorhitwas"HahabulHabol".Eddie
Mesa,anotherteenidolfromtheperiod,becameknownasthe"ElvisPresleyofthePhilippines".Backthen,many
Filipinosreferredtorockbandsas"combos",manyofwhichusednontraditionalinstrumentslikefloorbass
bongos,maracas,andgastanks.[1]

1970s:ManilaSoundandClassicPinoyRock

Intotheearly1970s,Filipinomusicwasgrowingmorenationalisticandsociopoliticalinnature,aswellasusing
Tagalogmoreoften.PopmusicstilldominatedtheairwaveswithdiscoandfunkbandssuchastheAPOHiking
SocietyandHotdog.SongslikeHotdog's"IkawangMissUniversengBuhayKo"("YouaretheMissUniverseof
MyLife")combinedFilipinoandEnglishwithinthesamesong.Thishelpedinnovatethesocalled"Manila
Sound".OPM(OriginalPilipinoMusic)alsobecamepopular.
However,emergingsocialandpoliticalconsciousnesssomehowcreepedintotheindustrywiththetraditionalallied
genresthatarefolkandrockmusic.FolkmusiciansandbandsincludedFreddieAguilar,Asin,HeberBartolome
andFlorante.(In1978,FreddieAguilar'sdebutsingle,"Anak",becamethemostcommerciallysuccessfulFilipino
recordinginhistory.ThesongbecameknownalsoinotherAsiancountriesandinEurope.)PerhapsAsin,an
ethnicfolkband,wasthefirstcommercialbandtosuccessfullybringaproenvironmentsongtotheairwaveswith
"MasdanMoAngKapaligiran".Alsofamousforprovidingsubtlerebellious(antiMarcosdictatorshipsentiment
wasgrowingatthattime)andpeacemessagesbehinditsskillfulvocalharmonizing,Asingavethemasseshits
suchas"BayanKongSinilangan(Cotabato)"and"Balita".
JuandelaCruzBand,agarageandbluesrockinfluencedgroupconsistingofdrummerJoey"Pepe"Smith,bassist
MikeHanopol,andleadguitaristWallyGonzales,areoftencreditedforusheringinthefirst"rock&roll
revolution"inthePhilippinesthatlastedfromthelate'60stothelate'70s(alsoknownasthe"GoldenAgeof
PinoyRock").Consideredbymanytobethe"grandfathers"ofPinoyrock,theyplayedalargeroleinre
awakeningnationalpridethroughtheirbluesyTagalogrocksongsatatimewhenthemusiccirculating
predominantlyinthelocalsceneusedlyricsinEnglish.DuringaWoodstockesqueconcertinLunetaPark,the
groupperformedtheiroriginal"HimigNatin"forthefirsttime.
Beinginfluencedbythecounterculture,thebandsofthe'70swereknowntohaveneverbeensidelined
commerciallyandsometimestookthecenterstagebystorm.TheradiostationDZRJ,particularlytheAMweekend
"PinoyRockandRhythm"showhostedbytheexFineArtsstudentfromPhilippineWomen'sUniversitynamed
DanteDavid,a.k.a.Howlin'Dave,providedthemuchneededsupportandpublicitytoPinoyrockduringthisera.
Today,manymusicjournalistsrefertotheworksofthesepioneeringartistsasClassicPinoyRocktodistinguish
themfromtheworksofrelativelyyoungerPinoyrockbands,especiallythosethatemergedinthe1980sthrough
the1990s,muchasotherrocktraditionsaredividedintoclassicrockandmodernrock.

1980s
Intheearlytomid1980s,groupslikeRP,withGoffMacaraegandBobAves,Nuklus,Sinaglahi,UPSintunados,
Patatag,Tambisan,andsoloistslikethenationalistfolkrocksingersPaulGalangandJessSantiago,theprogressive
folkduoInangLaya,theprogressivePinoyrockbandTheJerks,gNoelCabangonwereahitonstreetconcerts
andcampustours.ThesegroupsofartistsreunitedandformedBuklod(BukluranngmgaMusikeroparasaBayan),
whichlaterRomDonggetoofSinaglahi,NoelCabangonandReneBongcocanofLingkodSiningtookastheirnew
bandnamewhenitdisbandedaftertheEDSARevolution.
TheDawnisanotherPinoyrockbandthatemergedinthe80's,thesongsthattheycreatedwereinfluencedbynew
wavemusicandpostpunk.TheDawnreleasedtheirindependentlyreleasedsinglein1986.
Manymusicjournalistsandenthusiasts,aswellasmusiciansthemselves,attributedtheflourishinginthemid'80s
ofnewwaveandpostpunkinfluencedbandstoDWXBFM,whichbeganplayingindependentlyreleasedsingles
ofunsignedlocalbands.OtherbandshaveemergedincludingDean'sDecember,EthnicFaces,IdentityCrisisand
ViolentPlayground,allofwhichwereabletorecordandreleasetheirrespectivealbumsintheyearsthatfollowed.
AnotherbandnamedTheWudswasformedinthe80's,themembersarecomposedofAlfredGuevara(bass)
BobbyBalingit(guitar)andAjiAdriano(drums).ThegroupwasestablishedinJuly16,1983.GuevaraandBobby
WudsBalingitweresingalonghomeboysthatwerebornandbredinthestreetsinatoughManilaneighborhood.

Beforeformingthegroup,GueveraandBalingithadfirstcreatedanacousticfolksinginggroupcalledThinkGod,
theyplaythemusicofJamesTaylorandCrosby,StillsandNashcoversatVariousShakey'sPizzaparlorsinthe
Philippines.TheychangedtheirnametoTheWoods,aftertheJethroTullalbum"SongsFromtheWood".Bobby
Wudscontinuestoperform,heattendedastreetconcertinBaguioCityduringtheBaguioDayCelebrationsin
2012thatwasorganizedinAssumptionroadbyChristelPaySeng.[2]

1990s
Duringthestartofthedecade,TheHayp,IntrovoysandAfterImagewereamongtheprominentbandsenjoying
mainstreamrecognition.AnundergroundmusicscenewasalreadyburgeoninginsomeunknownbarsinManila.
RedRocks(whichlaterbecameClubDredd),togetherwithMayric's(nowSazi's)andKampo(Yoshinthemid
'90s),weretheonlyvenueswhereunsignedbandswereallowedtoplaytheirownsongs.Bandswereinfluenced
fromsuchgenresaspowerpop,shoegazer,postpunk,alternativerock(Eraserheads,ColorItRed,TheYouth,Half
LifeHalfDeath,FeetlikeFins,AdventCall,Alamid),hardrock,heavymetal(Razorback,Askals,Wolfgang,
DahongPalay),hardcore,punkanddeathmetal(Skychurch,GenitalGrinder,DeathAfterBirth,Disinterment,
KabaongniKamatayan,LoadsofMotherhood,WUDS,Yano,BadOmen,Rumblebelly,Disinterment,
Deiphago)andSignos(CebuCity'sundergrounddeathmetql)
Thelate1980sandearly1990smarkedthebeginningofwhatwasknownastheeraofundergroundrockand
progressivemusic,withNU107.5playingunknownbandsthroughFrancisBrew's"IntheRaw".Itwasthrough
thisstationthatmanyoftheprominentandpromisingrockbandswerediscoveredsuchasTheBreed,
GreyHoundz,Slapshock,SugarFree,FatalPosporos,ItchyWorms,Peryodiko,Monsterbot,TanyaMarkova,
Pedicab,andmanyothers.NU107.5wastheonlyradiostationthatplayedmusiclongerthanthestandardradio
formatwouldallow,aswellassoundtracks(TheReelScore).Apartfromallottingairtimetonewandknown
foreignrockbandssuchasSaveFerris,VerucaSalt,Metallica,AudioslaveandSoundGardenetc.,itgavefull
exposuretoFilipinogroupssuchasSugarHiccup,Eraserheads,Imago,CynthiaAlexander,ParokyaniEdgar,
Wolfgang,Razorback,Ciudad,Teeth,Urbandub,Putreska,TropicalDepression,Rivermaya,Yano,Siakol,and
Cheese.ItsprestigiousNU107RockAwardshonoredthePhilippinerockindustry'sbestandbrightestfor17years.
Toaddtotheplightoftheundergroundbands,radiostationswouldnotplaytheirmusicduetothepayolasystem
intheradioindustrydespitethefactthatmostofthesebands,ifnotall,hadselfproduced(indie)albums.But
DWLA105.9challengedthecurrentsystembyprovidingavenueforthebandstobroadcasttheiroriginalsongs.
Pinoyrockenthusiastswerefinallyelatedtoheartheirfavoriteundergroundbandsrulingtheairwaves.
ThecommercialsuccessofEraserheadspavedthewayformorePinoyrockactssuchasRivermaya,Rizal
UndergroundandTheYouthgettingrecorddeals.Somebraveallfemalebandsgotsigned(Kelt'sCross,Tribal
Fish,AgawAgimat)andafewsoloartistsaswell(MaeganAguilar,BayangBarrios,DJAlvaro).Rapperscrossed
overwithgreatsuccess(FrancisMwithHardwareSyndromeandErectus),despitesomeearliercontroversywith
hiphopbashingallegedlyincitedbysomeartists.Thesebandsadoptedavarietyofinfluencesbothinimageand
musicmanyfellunderaparticulargenrehowever,thecrossingoverofstyleswasmostofteninevitable.
Thisnationalsceneinfluencedprovincialbandsaswell.IntheBicolregion,
thePinoyrockscenewascarriedbybandssuchasBoardwork,Bluestar,
IdiocyandHellbent,tonameafew.Localrockconcertsbecamethegoto
schoolfundraisingactivities,suchthattherewasaconcertalmostevery
week.Withtheexplosionofthebandscene,however,camehordesof
wannabeswhowantedapartoftheaction,albeitlackingintalent.The
proliferationofbandswithadearthoftalenteventuallycausedthelossof
interestofthelocalsandassuch,contributedtothefadingoutofthescene.

2000s

Intheearly2000s,hiphop,reggae,acousticpop/jazzandR&BinfluencedbandsdominatedthePhilippinemusic
scene,causingPinoyrocktotakeabackseat.OnlyanumberofPinoyrockbandsmanagedtostayinthe
mainstreamduringthisperiod.In2003,anotsowellknownhomeeducatedDJnamedDJROstartedplayingina
smallbarandrestaurantknownasGweilosDJROhelpedpromotetheclubeveryMondaynightwhiletherewas
anemergenceofFilipinorockbandslikeBamboo,OrangeandLemonsandKitchieNadalthatstartedperforming
inGweilosandeventuallybecamepopular.In2004,Pinoyrockonceagaingainedprominence,withtheriseofyet
anotherwaveofFilipinorockbands.Duringthistime,thePinoyrockmusicsceneinCebualsogainedexposure.
2001sawindiebandThePinUpGirls,madeupofformerKeltscrossmembersandundergroundmusicians,
signingtoKnowItAllRecordsinTacoma,Washington,makingthemthefirstManilabasedbandtosignwithan
Americanlabel.ThisdevelopmentcausedquiteanegativereactionfromtheManilarocksceneasmostmusicians
deemedthebandunworthyofthebreak.
ThePinUpGirlsreleasedanEPworldwidecalledTasteTestthatsoldout.KnowItAllthenprintedanewbatch
dubbed"TasteTest:TheExpandedMenu".Theleadoffsingle"Caress"hitnumberoneontheNewJerseyand
Internetbasedradio,flashbackalternatives.com.
2004alsosawtheemergenceofthefirstPhilippinevirtualband,Mistula.Withtheinternetastheirstage,Mistula
camealivethroughtheirofficialwebsite(http://www.mistula.com),afusionofmusic,graphicart,literature,
photographyandotherartforms.
Therestofthe2000sfurtherusheredinthemainstreambuzzonPinoyrock,andalongwithitbandsthatleaned
moretowardspopsensibilities.Duringthistime,bandssuchasHale,Cueshe,SpongeCola,andCallalilygained
mainstreamexposure.
2006waswhenFilipinoband,Klaappearedinthecommercialmusicscenewiththeirfulllengthalbumentitled
ManilaHigh,distributedbySonyBMGMusicEntertainment.Theirfirsthitwas"Jeepney"whichwasreleasedin
thesummerof2006.AccordingtothePhilippineDailyInquirer,thebandstartedtheresurgenceoftheManila
Soundgenreintothemodernworldthroughtheirownmixoffunky,jazzyelectronicrockmusic.Thebandwasalso
partofthetributealbumHopiaManiPopcorn.TheymadeafunkyremakeofVST&Co.'s"RockBabyRock"
whichhitnumber1intheairwaves.
Inrecentyearsaswell,bandslikeUrbandub,Pupil,Chicosci,SlapshockandTypecasthavealsoplayedinother
countriessuchasSingaporeandtheUS,amongstothers.Somehaveevengarnerednominationsandrecognition
frominternationallybasedpublicationsandawardgivingbodies.Thisismainlyattributedtotheeffectofthe
internetandglobalizationonalmostanythingincludingmusic,aslistenersfromothercountriescannowseeand
hearsongsandvideosofbandsoverseaswithoutleavingtheircountry.

2010s
Inmid2010,NU107,knownasthenation'spremierFMstationusingarockformat,hadbeentakendownasit
wassoldbyitsmanagementafteradeclininginterestbytheaudience.Intheearly2010s,rockmusicisstilllargely
popularinthecountry,despitedeclininginsalesandthedominationofKPop,popandelectronicmusic.
FollowingNUlefttheairwaves,anotherFMstationJam88.3hasbeenfullytransitionedtoalternativerock/indie
pop,includingsongsplayedbylocalpopularrockartistsandbands,aswellasindieactsthatareunder"Fresh
Filter".
In2015,entrepreneurandmusicianRJJacintolaunchedthePinoyRock'nRollHallofFame,whichwas
establishedtorecognizenotableFilipinomusicians.[3]
