There has been an indispensable relationship between man and his
surroundings since times immemorial. Man is dependent on his environment for each and every little need of his. There has always been a harmonius co-relation between man and his environment and this corelation has led to a balanced life on this planet. But since the advent of industrial revolution the scenario has drastically changed. Slowly and steadily the balance has shifted towards imbalance and the scales have become heavier on the wrong side. Over a period of time there has been a large scale degradation of our environment and in recent times it has increased at an alarming rate. In the wake of development our surroundings and our environment has been made to suffer. Due to this slowly has crept in the concept of sustainable development which now has turned out to be the need of the hour. As per Wikipedia , sustainability means the ability to endure. But frankly speaking there is no particular or a worldly accepted definition of sustainability but just for records the United Nations has defined sustainability as the ability of the present generations to meet their needs without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs. The most important reason for the development of the need of sustainable development is development itself but development is something which cannot be stopped and hence the concept of sustainable development is of prime importance in todays context. As a future technocrat and a responsible citizen of this world it is my ethical and moral duty to contribute towards sustainability. As a popular saying goes every good thing begins at home and sustainability is no exception to it. Small things like switching off the lights and fans when not needed , not leaving the tap open while brushing or any other activity can largely help in sustainable development. These ethics may seem to be very small in the first go but form a very important part of the larger picture. I can also encourage and promote the use of non-conventional and renewable sources of energy which are of prime importance as far as sustainability is concerned. No big task can be achieved without involving people into it. To achieve this I will try to work in co-ordination with various NGOS and spread awareness among the people regarding the need of sustainable development. I would also conduct some workshops in the industries for the workers and industrialists in order to inculcate among them the importance of sustainability and I will also suggest them various ways in which they can contribute for the cause of sustainable development. I will also advocate the need for including this in school
curriculum as this would lead to the development of a sense of
responsibility in people right from a young age. Sustainable development is the need of the hour and it is important for each one of us to realise its importance and act accordingly before it is too late. Only combined efforts towards sustainability can get us out of the soup we currently are in partly because of our ignorance.
