Academic Integrity Policy statement: Any student who is found to have violated the
University's Academic Integrity Policy in this course, no matter how minor the
violation, will be reported by the instructor and face sanctions up to expulsion from
the University.

I have read and understand the AIP and the above statement:__________________________

1. (20 points) Propane gas at 20 bar and 400K is throttled at steady-state flow
process to 1.2 bar. Following suitable generalized K-W correlations (Table 3.1 of
SVNA textbook), and the propane critical constants (Tc (K) = 369.8, Pc (bar)= 42.48
bar from Table B.1 of SVNA textbook), the throttling process cycle can be described,
as below assuming the real state 2 ~ ideal state 2:

R = 8.314 J/mol K

a- Estimate the final temperature of the propane

b- Estimate the entropy change for the process

c- Given the process is a spontaneous open-system at steady-state, indicate if
the total change of entropy of the system and surroundings will be higher,
lower or equal to zero.

2. (10 points) Write a relationship for U as a function of Cp and S at constant
pressure:

3. (30 points) Steam from a power plant is fed to a turbine operating adiabatically.
The exhaust from the turbine is condensed to a saturated liquid, which is then
pumped to the boiler. You are given that P2 = 8000 kPa, T2 = 400 C, T4 = 100 C.
Assume the pump operates reversibly, and that kinetic and potential energy changes
are negligible.

a) Draw the cycle on a TS diagram

b) What is the thermal efficiency for the Rankine cycle?

c) What is the thermal efficiency of a practical cycle with a turbine efficiency of
0.75?

d) What is the quality of the turbine exhaust for the Rankine and practical cycle?

4. (40 points) A refrigeration cycle of HFC-134a with an evaporator temperature of

5 oF, and a condenser temperature of 80 oF, follows this vapor-compression cycle:

The thermodynamic properties of the HFC-134a refrigerant are as follows:

and the corresponding P vs. H plot is:

a) Identify and calculate the heat absorbed in the evaporation (QC)

b) Identify and calculate the work done by the compressor as if this one was
isentropic

c) Identify and calculate the actual work done by the compressor (step 2 ! 3),
assuming the efficiency of the compressor is 0.70 of the isentropic
compressor.

d) Determine actual refrigeration efficiency

e) What is the circulation rate of the refrigerant if the refrigeration capacity is
100,000 (Btu)(hr)-1 (Qc(dot))
