I. TECHNICAL COURSE:
A. MATHEMATICS
Math 1E - College Algebra
A course covering linear equations in one unknown, coordinates and graphs, system linear
equations, exponents and radicals, elements of quadratic equations , advance topics in quadratic
equations, system involving quadratic, ratios, proportion and variation, the binomial theorem,
progression, inequalities, complex number, theory of equation, computation and logarithms,
permutations and combinations, probability, mathematical induction,
determinants, partial
fractions infinite series method of least squares and related topics.
5 units; Pre-requisite: High School Graduate
Math 7 - Plane Trigonometry
Study of the basic transcendental properties of exponential and logarithmic functions,
trigonometric functions as applied to solutions of right triangles, the concept of trigonometric
identities and equations general angles, radians and application of these solutions of oblique
triangles.
3 units; Co-requisite: Math 1E
Math 13 - Solid Mensuration and Spherical Trigonometry
A course covering geometric property of solids, surfaces and volumes of various solids
such as cubes, spheres, cylinders, prisms, and frustum of solids and the measurement of plane
figures, solids, and spherical surfaces.
3 units; Pre-requisites: Math 1E , Math 7
Math 17E - Analytic Geometry
A course covering Cartesian coordinates, locus of equations, equation of a locus, the
straight line , conic sections, coordinates transformation, polar coordinates, parametric equations,
solids analytic geometry.
Math 18 - Differential Calculus
A course covering derivatives and differentials, maxima and minima, time rate, ,
application to geometry, physics, mechanics and solutions of equation by Newtons method.

A course on methods of integration and application in finding areas, volumes, centroid,

Operations with the free body concept, equilibrium of coplanar, and non-coplanar force
system. Analysis of trusses, friction, kinematics of particles and rigid bodies.

Axial force, shear and bending moment, stress-strain relationships torsion, bending and
shear stress, combined stresses, deflection, buckling, plastic behavior.

Properties of fluids, fluid statics, kinematics, continuity, energy and momentum
principles, laminar and turbulent flow with friction, introduction to boundary layers, drag , jets

areas in industry of its weakness and vulnerability, of its strength and opportunities essential to

Impedance methods, frequency response, three phase 2-port circuits.

Sources of water pollution, treatment of water for control of pathogens and toxic
contaminants, treatment of sewage. BOD testing and treatment of industrial effluents , analytical

Graphical and analytical study of displacement velocity and acceleration of basic
mechanisms.

Study of the basic design of cams, gears and gear trains. Force analysis of machine
elements and foundation, balance of machinery and vibration in machines.

Study of the basic principles, use, care, selection, construction and calibration of industrial
instruments; includes experiments in instrumentation and control measurements used in
engineering practice such as pressure gauges, strain gauges, platform scales, speed measuring
devices, planimeters, viscometer, orsat apparatus and calorimeters.

ME 414 - Internal Combustion Engine
Thermodynamics principles involved in internal combustion engines, properties or fuels,
combustion, carburetor and injection; performance and testing of an internal combustion engine.

ME 422 - Mechanical Lab. 2


The study, analysis and performance evaluation of internal combustion engines (diesel and
gasoline), steam engines, steam turbines, steam boilers, duplex steam pumps and compressors;
includes the test of properties and characteristics of fuels and lubricants, calorific test of fuels, flue
gas analysis; steam calorimeter test.

ME 423 - Pneumatics Control System Application & Design


A comprehensive study of basic pneumatic control systems as applied to the latest advance
industrial technology using air as fluid for automation of light loads; also includes the design of
pneumatic control system w/PLC

ME 424A - Refrigeration Engineering


Deals with the basic principles of refrigeration, the different refrigeration systems with
discussion of the various components and functions; includes the design of refrigeration plant and
the determination of cooling loads and capacity of refrigeration equipment.

ME 425 - Heat Transfer


Deals with the different modes of heat transfer, laws governing conduction, radiation and
convection of heat; overall coefficients of transmission and its application to the design of
common heat exchangers such as condensers, cooling coils and evaporators.

ME 426 - Machine Design 1


Study of the design of machine elements such as shafts, screws, springs, keys and
couplings; combined stresses and theories of failures. Variable loading and stress concentration.
Factors of safety and endurance limit in design.

ME 511A - Steam Power Engineering


Study of fuels and combustion, energy flow in steam power stations, steam generators,
steam prime movers, steam auxiliaries and accessories, and the gas loop and feedwater loops of
steam power plants.

ME 512A - Mechanical Lab. 3
Analysis and performance evaluation of refrigeration, air conditioning and ventilating
system. Practical realization of the basic theories and principles governing the complete test and
operation of a mechanical plant.

ME 513 - Industrial Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Design


A course on industrial design and application of refrigeration and air conditioning
principles.

ME 514 - Machine Design 2


Continuation of Machine Design 1. Study of Journals, gears, welded joints; the selection
and use of bearings and flexible power transmitting elements; empirical design of machine
elements; design of complete machines, preparation of detail and assembly drawings.

ME 517 - Industrial Processes


Study of industrial processes, manufacturing procedures and corresponding flow sheets,
industrial controls; emphasis on processes and controls found in industrial plants that may be
visited during inspection trips.
2 units; Pre-requisite: 5th year standing

ME 520 - Power Plant Operation & Maintenance


Study of the operation and maintenance of hydroelectric plants, gas turbine plants,
compressed air plants; also includes a study of the necessary instrumentation for the control of
power plants and other plants.

ME 524 - Power Plant Design


A study of the fundamental concepts in the design and installation of typical power plants
such as steam power plant, diesel electric plant, geothermal power plant as well as other
generating plants using unconventional sources of energy; it includes the study of location,
capacity and economic justifications.

ME 525 - Industrial Plant Design
A comprehensive study of the different factors that should be considered in establishing an
industrial plant , including the necessary processes, equipment design and sizing with emphasis on
economic factors.
4 units; Pre-requisite: ME 513 , ME 511A ,
Co-requisite: ME 517

ME 529 - On the Job Training


Course on the actual on the job training of a graduating student in a factory, industrial
firms, Business establishments, Mechanical Engineering Firms and any firm or establishment that
engages in Mechanical Engineering practice such as Refrigeration and Air Conditioning,
Designing and Fabricating, Installation and Maintenance, Tending and operations of Steam Power
Plants, Diesel Power Plants, Hydroelectric Power Plants , Nuclear Power Plants, Geothermal
Power Plants etc.
36 hrs. On the Job Training per week - 12 units
Pre-requisite: Had finished all Academic requirements.

Mech. 511 - Hydraulic Machineries


Study of the Hydraulic control system as applied to the latest advance industrial
technology using oil as fluid for automation of heavy loads; design of hydraulic controls; also
includes the study of hydro-electric power plant.
2 units; Pre-requisite: Mech. 421B

Shop 1 - Work Shop Theory & Practice


Introduction to safety and works organization in a workshop; simple workshop measuring
instrument, hand tools, fitting bench work, bench drill and bench grinder; sheet metal working;
introduction to welding, principles of welding processes, welding metallurgy, joining processes (
joint design in welding), testing and inspection of welds, cost in welding and training of welders,
foundry and metal casting.
2 units; Pre-requisites: ES 1A

Shop 2 - Machine Shop Theory & Practice


Introduction to safety precautions in the Machine Shop, machine classification and their
uses and operation; measuring instrument and gauges, lathes, lathe work and lathe tools, shapers,
planers, drilling and boring machines; milling machine and cutters, abrasives, grinding wheels,
grinding machines; metal sawing, press work, screw thread production and measurement,
miscellaneous machining processes.
2 units; Pre-requisite: Shop 1
