HVT Study Guide 1

Recommended Deadline: 16 October 2016

1) Read through the Lecture Notes and prepare a one page summary.
2) Answer the following questions:

Compare the pros and cons of overhead lines and underground cables. The cost of underground cables is typically three times
that of comparable overhead lines.

What is a bushing?

This is a device that provide safely passing electricity which has high voltage or high current. It is insulated.

Why is oil put in a transformer? This oil provides to isolation of transformers and cools to transformers.
What are the differences between Current and Voltage Transformers?
Why should the secondary of a CT never become open-circuited?

CT is a low impedance device in series with the main

current while VT is a high impedance shunt device.

CT should never be open circuited because current flows

them to ground if anyone touch any side. It has about 4000V.

Describe the concept of auto reclosing. ( You may look online for ABB auto-reclosing)
Auto-recloser can automatically close the breaker after there is a fault. It is like a circuit breaker.

How does an isolator differ from a circuit breaker? Major difference between isolator and circuit breaker is that isolator
device, whereas circuit breaker is an on-load device.

is an off-load

AC is much more efficient for transmitting power through a cable as you
can use higher voltages and therefore lower currents. Because it is AC, the
transmission lines have a characteristic impedance which is the same for any

voltage to another. It therefore requires much heavier( therefore more
expensive) conductors. DC also presents a problem with electrolysis in

breakers.

Why aren't electric power lines fully coated all over with insulation?
How would it be possible to manufacture smaller substations?
What does IEC 60183 refer to?

This standard intended to give guidance in the selection of the conductor size, insulating level and construction of cable to
be used on three- phase alternating current systems operating of voltages exceeding. (Withdrawn Standard)

Discuss the Ferranti Effect in Power System Engineering.

Air is an excellent insulator - much better than any

material we can hope to make. The problem with air of
course is that it does not provide a physical barrier to
contact as a plastic would. If plastic insulation were used,
it would have to be 1/2 inch to 2 incles thick, maybe more,
because of the high voltages used (sometimes 700,000
Volts). That would increase not just the cost, but also the
weight of the cable - so it would need more support, so the
towers and transmission lines would cost even more.
