Creating (Instructional Strategies;
HOW it will be taught ):

Evaluating Artworks : (the overarching things that you will grade; the
rubric in the assessment section will be more specific) (bulleted)
*texture in the paint
*proper use of warm colors and cool colors in the Daydream/Nightmare composition
*originality
*Application of cut paper used in collage
Exhibiting Artworks (be thoughtful) : (bulleted)

*Artwork will be exhibited in the art room display case

*A couple of the more successful Daydream/Nightmare projects can be published in the
school paper or intranet site.
Assessment Procedures : (assessments used before, during, and after
the lesson) (bulleted)
Before :
*Ask the class what they know about collage? What are some examples?
*Can they name a famous artist of storybook illustrator that uses collage?
*Ask the class whats an example of a warm color? Whats an example of a
cool color?
*Ask the class about their ideas of what a daydream is? Whats their idea
of a Nightmare?

During:
*Walk around and check that the students are getting the concept of
creating textures with tempera paint.
*check that the student understand how to separate out warm colors from
cool colors for the most part, some overlapping/blending will naturally
occur with warm and cool, thats okay in small portions.
After : (please attach assessment tool to end of this lesson plan)*
*Rubric will be attached
*All students will hang up their collages, and the class will participate in a
group discussion about how individual Daydream? Nightmares projects
were successful or needs some tweaking/ modifications using vocabulary;
warm colors, cool colors, collage, theme.
Lesson Structure and Procedures: The sequence of events of the
lesson elements. Please list each sequence by day or class period.
Consider: * Four Studio Structures * Eight Studio Habits of Mind *
Procedures should be linked to objectives * Materials Management
Day / Class #1
Preparation Before Class (materials management):
*Stacks of pre-cut paper-12X18 paper, fold short sides together, once
folded together, fold the short side of the paper to the mid-point. When the
paper is unfolded, the fold creases create 6 rectangles. This will be the
paper used for collage paint and texture. Half the page -3 rectangles for
warm colors, half the page-3 rectangles for cool colors. *I will pre-fold the
paper before class to save time.
*cool tempera paint colors
*warm tempera paint colors
*brushes/ mark making tools for textures/ rinse water-4 dog bowls. 2 dog
bowls for warm color rinse water, 2 dog bowls for cool color rinse water
*covered workspace with newspaper

*paper plates for paint

*collection of colored paper scraps
*pencil, crayons
Engagement / Opening :
*Begin class with discussion and a Power Point showing collage examples
by Matisse and Eric Carle, talking about collage elements that make-up the
illustration.
*Have a color chart showing the difference between warm and cool colors, have a class
discussion with student participation around examples the students can give of whats a warm
and whats a cool color.
*Show the teachers example of the Daydream/Nightmare, so the students will have a reference
for their projects.
*Have a class participation/brainstorm about subject matter/ideas for a Daydream/Nightmare
theme.
Connection to Prior Learning:
*Drawing original subject matter
*painting with tempera paint
*cutting and gluing
Modeling:
*I will demonstrate how to create textured paper by painting paper and
using a tool to add texture. I will demo on the 12X18 folded paper, 3
rectangles cool color, 3 rectangles warm color. The students will stand
around the work table and watch the demo.
*I will demo how to dip a mark making tool, a branch for example, in paint
and add texture to the rectangles.
*Mark making can switch between a branch, sponge, caps etc.. being
mindful to stay with warm or cool color schemes.
* demo how to put wet paint on a drying rack or on the floor in the hall, for
example, until dry.
Procedures :
*The students will each get a piece of refolded 12X18 paper, they will write their names on
the back of the paper.
*Break the class into 2 groups, one group painting warm textures, one group painting cool
textures-then switch after 15 minutes.
Guided Practice:
*Assist students that need help with making textures, demo individually
with a student if needed.
*Ask the student if they are painting with warm or cool colors?
Independent Practice:
*The students will write their names on the bottom of their 12X18 folded
rectangle paper.
*The students will paint/ make textures
*Peer to peer help can be used if needed in creating textures, students
helping each other with texture suggestions.

*students will put paper to dry on the drying rack or in the hall.
Clean-up:
*Students will collect textured papers and stack the papers in a cool color
stack and a warm color stack on the work table to be used in their next art
class.
*The students will be reminded to only use their own textured paper for the
collage.
Conclusion:
The class has learned how warm and cool colors can be used to create
atmosphere for a Daydream/ Nightmare collage, and what the definition of
a collage is.
Eliminate Class #2 if only one session is needed, repeat as many times as
needed for multiple days / classes
Day / Class #2
Preparation Before Class (materials management):
*stacks of warm and cool colors textured papers created by the students.
*12X18 heavy stock paper cut in half to make 2 6X9 papers for each
student to create their projects. 1 paper, 6X9 for Daydream and 1 paper,
6X9 for Nightmare
*glue dots
*glue & scissors
*pencils, kneaded erasers, crayons
*research examples of collage
*colored paper scraps to use in addition to the textured collage paper.
Engagement / Opening :
*Quick review of the first class as a reminder of whats expected in the
Daydream/Nightmare project.
*Have the students sketch their ideas for their project in their sketchbooks
*When sketches are approved by the teacher, students will begin their
finished art using the textured papers, scissors and glue. Names on the
back of artwork before they start their illustrations!
*The students will use their 12X18 textured paper plus colored
construction paper scraps, pencil, scissors and glue to create their
Daydream/Nightmare on the 6X9 heavy stock paper.
*When the students finish their Daydream/Nightmare project, the art will
be glue-dotted on to heavy stock 12.5X18.5 paper, names on the back.
Connection to Prior Learning:
*Discussion from the prior class
Modeling:
*The teacher will have pre-cut shapes for demo, as not to waste time
creating art from scratch for a demo.
*Teacher will demo cutting a few shapes and glue to paper surface to demo
illustration technique.

Procedures :
Guided Practice:
*Teacher will help or make suggestions to a student, for cutting shapes
when needed for the students illustration.
Independent Practice:
*students will draw with pencil, cut and glue onto their illustration paper.
Peers can help peers.
Clean-up:
*Students will clean their own work areas and store artwork on their
individual shelf space.
Conclusion:
*The students will have finished their Daydream/Nightmare collage

Differentiation / Accommodations / Modifications / Increase in
Rigor : (to help meet the needs of all learners, learning differences,
cultural and language differences, etc.) (include all listed below)
Differentiation:
I will provide a step by step picture demo, hard copy, for ESL students and students
that need an additional resource to follow.
Accommodations:
*A student thats a kinesthetic learner can role play the scenario of a
Daydream and a Nightmare, act out their project before beginning the

collage portion of the project.

Modifications:
*the subject matter for Daydream/Nightmares can be simplified, making
shapes simple and graphic. For example, a cloud shape could be used for
Daydream, and angry thunderbolt could be used for Nightmare or the
student can make a simple pattern in warm colors and cool colors.
Increase in Rigor:
*The student can create a third Night Dream as a third in the series;
Daydream, Nightmare, and Night dream-student can decide color scheme
for Night Dream, students choice of color pallet.
Classroom Management: (strategies consistent with the learning needs
of the lesson that also meet student behavior needs to help keep students
actively engaged) Includes: behavior management plan, time
management, transitions, and lesson/class wrap-up
Behavior Management Plan :
*The classroom rules will be posted in the room on poster board in large
print.
*The students will have had the opportunity to add suggestions to the class
rules so that the students are in agreement that the rules are fair and need
to be followed.
Time Management /Transitions :
*The students will clean-up 5 minutes before the end of class.
*when finished cleaning their work space, the students will stay seated
until dismissed.
Lesson/Class Wrap-up (same as conclusion)

Extensions : (activities for early finishers that extend students

understanding of and thinking about the learning objectives by applying
their new knowledge in a different way)(bullet, minimum of 2)
*The student that finishes early can find an example of collage art from the research books and
printouts and write what they like or dislike about the art using collage, warm and cool colors
and theme in their mini-critique.
Follow-Up to Todays Lesson : (quick activity for review or building on
todays learning that will deepen student understanding and interconnect

concepts; may be incorporated in next session as connection to prior

learning or throughout the unit)
*A class group discussion on other ways a warm color or a cool color pallet can help give
emotion or atmosphere to a painting or book illustration-a theme other than
Daydreams/Nightmares. An example might be animals and cacti in the afternoon desert sun,
for warm colors.
Reflection : If you had the chance to re-teach this lesson, what would you
do differently ?)(complete this section in final draft after lesson has been
taught) (5 or more complete sentences)
