Successive Division : When the quotient of a division is again divided by same or another
divisor next divisor and this process is repeated, then it is called the successive division
if we divide 700 by 6, we get 116 as quotient and 4 as remainder then if 116 is divided
by another divisor say 11 then we get 10 as a quotient and 6 (zero) as remainder and again,
if we divide 10 by another divisor say 4 we get 2 as quotient and 2 as a remainder

So 700 was successively divided by 6, 11 and 4 and the corresponding remainders are 4, 6
and 2.
When a number N is divided successively by 7 and 5, remainders obtained are 2 and 3
respectively. What is the remainder when N is divided by 35?
The quotient obtained when N was divided by 7 is 5k+3. So N = 7(5k+3) + 2 = 35k+23. When
this number is divided by 35, the remainder is 23
Examples:
1) The least possible number of 3 digits when successively divided by 2, 3, 5, 6 gives
respective remainders of 1, 1, 2, 3 is :
Following method can be used.

Arrow downwards means to add up and the arrow slightly upward means multiplication.
Step 1. (9
Step 2. 47
Step 3. 14
Now 285 follows the conditions, however to find next such number we have to take the the
product of the divisors and add 285
The next higher number

Now to get the highest possible 3 digit number so we can get it by putting
Hence the required number
Hence (d) is the correct answer.
EXAMPLE 2 A number when successively divided by 2, 3, 5 it leaves the respective
remainders 1, 2 and 3. What will be the remainder if this number will be divided by 7?
SOLUTION
or
So, the least possible number is 23 and the higher numbers can be obtained as
.
So the higher numbers are 53, 83, 113, 143, 173, 213, 333, etc.
But when we divide all these possible numbers by 7 we get the different remainders.
EXAMPLE 3
remainders of 3, 5 and 4, what will be the last remainder when such a least possible umber
is divided successively by 8, 7 and 6?
SOLUTION
First we find the actual least possible no. then we move further
