AWS Standards Overview

The AWS Technical Department oversees the drafting and the publication of
engineering and welding consensus standards that are developed by the
legwork and expertise of our volunteer base via committees.

Types of Standards:

Codes

Specifications

Guides

Recommended practices

Interpretations

Methods

230 published technical standards.

Besides national standards, AWS collaborates with ANSI by coordinating

and submitting U.S. positions of ISO standards through our volunteer ISO
U.S. TAG committees.

What Constitutes a Committee?

Our committees can number anywhere from 5-60 volunteers.

On average committee size is usually about 15-20 members.

Some broader committees are subdivided into smaller, specialized

subcommittees to task workload.

In total, the Technical Department oversees the work of 166

committees, including subcommittees and U.S. TAGs.

All of the Technical Committees are open to the public and

encourage anyone interested in participating in standards
development to attend face-to-face meetings or apply on our
website: http://www.aws.org/technical/techapp.pdf

Our Technical Staff of 14, support our volunteer base with program
managers and coordinators.

IIW International Institute of Welding, Qualification and

Certification System
To fulfill standards and to avoid failures and repairs in welding
construction key staff in all welding related activities needs to have
an appropriate level of knowledge and competence in welding
technology and its application.
This can be done by using the International Systems for Education,
Training, Qualification and Certification run by IIW which is a unique
and comprehensive system, and in use in more than 40 countries.
The reference to this International Education, Training, Qualification
and Certification Systems in international standards (ISO 14731,
ISO 3834, ISO 17660), is a clear recognition of its value.

Background

AWS is member of IIW - IAB

International Authorization Board
IAB is the body created within the IIW structure to operate the
International IIW Qualification, Certification and Authorization
Systems
AWS is not an ANB (IWP, IWS, IWT, IWE Diploma Scheme)
An organization recognized by the national IIW member is
appointed as (ANB) Authorized National Body for the
supervision of the Qualification System in each country
AWS is the ANBCC for ISO 3834 for USA
An organization recognized by the national IIW member is
appointed as (ANBCC) Authorized National Body for
Companies Certification in each country. Representatives from
these ANBCCs form the Operational Management within the
IAB, and appoint IIW Assessors to ensure conformity of each
ANBCC to the agreed Rules.

Welding Coordinator

A responsible welding coordinator required for ISO 3834

Can be a single person of group of individuals that fulfill
all role requirements
Knowledge requirements can be met by having
education diplomas or certifications or must demonstrate
competency via audit
Equivalency is for knowledge requirements
Auditor still needs to establish competence to scheme
Equivalency increases value to industry for AWS CWT
and CWEng programs
