Introduction

Open-source software (OSS) is computer software with its source code made available with
a license in which the copyright holder provides the rights to study, change, and distribute the
software to anyone.
Hardware is a general term that refers to the physical artifacts of a technology. It may also
mean the physical components of a computer system, in the form of computer hardware.
Software means a series of instruction that performs a particular task is called as program.
Software will tell the hardware on how to process the data.
2.0 The Latest Open Source Operating System (OS)
2.1 Meaning Of Open Source OS
Open Source Operating System is any operating system that is free to use and which provides
the original code where the source code is available (under a copyright license) to the public,
which enables them to use, modify / enhance the operating system, and redistribute the
modified (or unmodified) form of the operating system. The open source can be modified and
distributed by anyone and are often developed as a community.
2.2 Example Of Open Source OS
Example 1: Linux

Linux is developed and released under the General Public License (GPU) and its source code
freely available to everyone. Linux is an operating system, based on UNIX, that runs on
many different hardware platforms and whose source code is available to the public . Linux
has a reputation as a very efficient and fast-performing system. This OS is compatible
operating system for PCs and a number of other processors. Linux first released in
1991. Linux current version is 3.10.0-327 was released on 19 November 2015.

Example 2 : Fedora

Fedora Core 1 was the first version of Fedora and was released on November 6, 2003. Fedora
is a popular open source Linux-based operating system. Fedora is designed as a secure,
general purpose operating system. Fedora latest version 3.17 was released on 1 December
2014. The operating system is developed on a six-month release cycle, under the auspices of
the Fedora Project. Fedora is sponsored by Red Hat.
3.0 The Latest Open Source Application Software
3.1 Meaning Open Source Application Software
Open source application software is computer software that is available in source code
form for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright
holders are provided under a software license that permits users to study, change, and
improve the software.

3.2 Example Of Open Source Application Software

Example 1 : Google

Google Chrome browser is an open source program for accessing the World Wide Web and
running Web-based applications and an online advertising service that places advertising near
the list of search results. Google released Chrome 2 September 2008, and as a stable public
release on December 11, 2008. Google latest updated, 50.02661.87 was released April 2016.
It also allows users to sign in with their Google accounts, which enables them to sync
bookmarks and open Web pages across multiple devices.
Example 2: Photoscape

PhotoScape is a graphics editing program, developed by MOOII Tech, Korea. The basic
concept of PhotoScape is 'easy and fun', allowing users to easily edit photographs taken from
their digital cameras or even mobile phones. Photoscape first version 3.1, was released May
28 2008. Photoscape current version,3.7 was released 11 September 2014. PhotoScape
provides a simple user interface to perform common photo enhancements including color
adjustment, cutting, resizing, printing and GIF animation.

5.0 Pervasive Computing

5.1 Meaning Of Pervasive Computing
Pervasive Computing means the technology that is gracefully integrated in our everyday life.
Pervasive Computing uses web technology, portable devices, wireless communications and
nomadic or ubiquitous computing systems. Pervasive computing relies on the convergence of
6

wireless technologies, advanced electronics and the Internet. There examples of pervasive
computing in our daily lives are which is the automatic Touchn Go, SmartTag toll gate & the
3G technology video phone.
5.2 Example Of Pervasive Computing
Smart TV

A smart TV is a digital television that is, essentially, an Internet-connected, storage-aware

computer specialized for entertainment. Smart TVs support Internet, Wifi, USB, Bluetooth
and flash memory cards from digital cameras, and audio or video connections. Along with the
OS and apps, the connecter enable on demand video services and access to pictures, music
and video on connected storage devices. Smart TVs can connect to many potential input
devices wirelessly, to enhance usability and control.
Apple Watch

Apple Watch is a Smart Watch that operates as a small wearable computing device worn on a
user's wrist. The Apple Watch was officially announced on September 9th, 2014, with
availability of the new device expected in early 2015. It incorporates fitness tracking and
health-oriented capabilities with integration with iOS and other Apple products and services.
7

The Apple Watch has the ability to make phone calls, check caller ID and access visual
voicemail, send and receive text messages, access stock and weather updates, provide fitness
capabilities via heart rate and other health monitoring sensors, offer map coordinates and
directions, and more.
6.0 Conclusion
Open Source can be used by anyone and because it has no copyright claims, so users are free
to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified
forms. The principles and practices are commonly applied to the peer production
development of source code for software that is made available for public collaboration.
