Review of Literature
Early brain development research review and update
by Pam Schiller
The first findings from the advancement of technology in the neuroscience
field made their way into the early childhood profession in Rethinking the
Brain: New Insights into Early Development published by the Families and
Work Institute (1996). This publication examined five major findings and
their relevance to the development of young children and to those who work
with young children.
Finding 1: The brain of a three yearold is two-and-a-half times more active
than an adults.
Finding 2: Brain development is contingenton a complex interplay between
genes and the environment.
Finding 3: Experience wires the brain.Repetition strengthens the wiring.
Finding 4: Brain development is nonlinear
Finding 5: Early relationships affect wiring.
Update: Whats new? In the past two decades neuroscience has flourished.
Many of the findings
have become mainstream and the applications from these findings have
shaped practices in early childhood classrooms and centers. For example,
teachers have adapted their environments to be more brain compatible by
reducing clutter and decorations. Infant and toddler teachers chatter
constantly to help little ones develop early language skills. In some places
infant and toddler caregivers move forward with children as they mature as
opposed to sending them on to the next teacher often a stranger.Emerging
research continues to provide findings that allow us to refine our practices.
Here are some of the latest findings that have relevance to our work with
children.
Finding 1: Music and language are partners in the brain.
Finding 2: Learning styles differ greatly across situations.
Finding 3: Touch, movement and gestures are critical to learning.
Finding 4: Technology has both a positive and a negative impact on the
brain.
Finding 5: During sleep the brain engages in data analysis, from
strengthening memories to solving problems.

Developing young childrens creativity: what can we learn from

research?
Autumn 2004 / Issue 32
32

In this article, Caroline Sharp of the NFER considers evidence from

research and theory as
it applies to developing young childrens creativity. She explains how
creativity is defined,
and identifies the implications for staff working in early childhood settings.
She also
identifies some common myths about developing young childrens
creativity.
Defining creativity
imagination
originality (the ability to come up with ideas and products that are new and
unusual)
productivity (the ability to generate a variety of different ideas through
divergent thinking)
problem solving (application of knowledge and imagination to a given
situation)
the ability to produce an outcome of value and worth.
Some myths about creativity
1. Creativity is limited to arts subjects.
2. Children find it easy to transfer learning from one area/domain to another.
3. The creative process is fun: it should not be taken too seriously.
4. Creativity is an in-born trait, limited to the talented few. Highly creative
people will find their own way, regardless of what happens at school.
5. Children can get all the creative experience they need from free play and
unstructured arts activities.
6. You dont need to be knowledgeable or skilful to be creative.
